TESOL Certification Individual Pathway
The Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certification Pathway: Additional Classroom Teaching Certificate are designed for teachers who hold a valid New York State Teaching Certificate, have a Master's Degree and wish to earn TESOL Certification without having to earn an additional degree.

What are the program requirements?
Prerequisites for this program are:
- a valid base teaching certificate,
- a master's degree,
- fingerprint clearance.
This pathway does not require a practicum, field study, observations or student teaching. Teachers who are NYS certified do not need to complete student teaching again when they are applying for additional certification. What courses are required to become certified?
The following Molloy courses are offered to meet the requirements of the Individual Pathway in these areas:
Methods of TESOL
- EDU 5140 - Teaching English as a New Language (3 credits of the 6 credits required)
- EDU 5256 - PK-12 TESOL and Bilingual Teaching Practices and Assessment in the Content Areas (3 credits of the 6 credits required)
Linguistics
- EDU 5252 - Introduction to Linguistics for TESOL and Bilingual Professionals (3 credits required)
English Grammar
- EDU 5254 - Structure and Application of American English (3 credits required)
Teaching Literacy Skills Methods
- EDU 5414 - The Science of Reading, Birth Through Grade 12 (3 credits required)*
*should meet the 3 credits required in college coursework for Teaching Literacy Skills Methods (it has been our experience the most certified teachers have this course in their academic background).
