Early Childhood (Birth - 2) Individual Pathway

The Individual Evaluation for Additional Certificate Pathway for Early Childhood (Birth - 2) is for teachers who hold a valid New York State Teaching Certificate and wish to earn an additional certification in Early Childhood Education Birth - 2 without having to earn an additional degree.

  • What are the program requirements?

    Prerequisites for this program are:

    • a valid base teaching certificate,
    • a master's degree,
    • fingerprint clearance. 

     

    This pathway does not require a practicum, field study, observations or student teaching. Teachers who are NYS certified do not need to complete student teaching again when they are applying for additional certification. For the full list of certification requirements in New York, visit the Office of Teaching Initiatives webpage. 

  • What courses are required to become certified?

    Six (6) semester hours of coursework must be completed for each developmental level requirement. Three (3) of these semester hours must be exclusively focused on the developmental level of the application, with none of the content falling outside those specific grades. For the other 3 semester hours, NYSED will consider coursework that overlaps the developmental level but is not exclusively focused on it.     The following courses offered at Molloy meet the pedagogical core requirements: 

    • EDU 5210 - Curriculum, Strategies, Methodology and Materials in Early Childhood Education, Birth - Grade 2*
    • EDU 5220 - Current Issues in Early Childhood Education, Birth - Grade 2: Assessment of Progress, Relationships, Families, Legal and Community Issues*
    • EDU 5414 - The Science of Reading, Birth Through Grade 12**

     

    *meets 3 credits in the college coursework exclusively at the Student Development Level (Early Childhood Birth - Grade 2). 

    **should meet the 3 credits required in college coursework for Teaching Literacy Skills Methods (it has been our experience the most certified teachers have this course in their academic background).

    NYS also requires 18 credits of Content Core courses representing college coursework in Concepts in Historical and Social Sciences (6 credits), Scientific Processes (6 credits) and Mathematical Processes (6 credits).
