Students with Disabilities Certification Pathway

The Individual Evaluation for Additional Certificate Pathway for Students with Disabilities Certification offers participants a course of study that effectively prepares them to meet the New York State teacher certification and New York City licensing requirements. Certification in Students With Disabilities - All Grades allows the teacher holding the certification to be certified in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 in the area of special education.  This certification will provide certified teachers with many exciting opportunities to work with students with disabilities at a variety of grade levels and in a variety of settings.

  • What are the program requirements?

    Prerequisites for this program are:

    • a valid base teaching certificate,
    • a master's degree,
    • fingerprint clearance. 

     

    This pathway does not require a practicum, field study, observations or student teaching. Teachers who are NYS certified do not need to complete student teaching again when they are applying for additional certification. For the full list of certification requirements in New York, visit the Office of Teaching Initiatives webpage. 

  • What courses are required to become certified?

    The following Molloy courses are offered to meet the requirements of the Individual Pathway in these areas: 

    Pedagogical Core (3 Credits)

    • EDU 5414 The Science of Reading, Birth Through Grade 12 (Teaching Literacy Skills Methods)*

     

    *should meet the 3 credits required in college coursework for Teaching Literacy Skills Methods (it has been our experience the most certified teachers have this course in their academic background). 

     

    Additional Pedagogy (12 credits)

    • EDU 5275 - Characteristics of Students with Disabilities, Including Developmental Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder (Foundations of Special Education- Students with Disabilities)
    • EDU 5276 - Assessment, Diagnosis and Evaluation of Students with Disabilities (Assessment, Diagnosis and Evaluation of Students with Disabilities)
    • EDU 5283 - Strategies, Methods, and Environments for Teaching Students with Disabilities Pre K –12 (Managing the Environment for Students with Disabilities)
    • EDU 5282 - Curriculum, Content, Practices & Environmental Issues for Teaching Childhood & Adolescent Students with Disabilities (Curriculum and Instruction for Students with Disabilities)
