What is required for this certificate?
The New York State Teaching Assistant (TA) certificate allows individuals to provide instructional support to students under the supervision of a certified teacher. New York State now issues three certificate levels:
- Initial TA
- TA Pre-Professional
- TA Professional
Initial TA Certificate
To qualify for the Initial TA certificate, candidates must:
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Complete three required workshops:
- School Violence Prevention and Intervention
- Child Abuse Identification and Reporting
- Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)
- Complete fingerprinting requirements
- Pass the NES (National Evaluation Series) exam
The required workshops are offered online throughout the year. Registration information can be found on Continuing Education's Education and Counseling page.
TA Pre-Professional and TA Professional Certificates
Individuals advancing beyond the Initial certificate must complete college coursework and meet NYSED experience requirements.
- TA Pre-Professional: Requires 9 college credits
- TA Professional: Requires a total of 18 college credits
