About the Library

The James E. Tobin "JET" library supports Molloy's mission, as well as, the goals of students and faculty by providing an environment conducive to academic learning. The Library has supported a wide variety of undergraduate programs for over half a century, graduate programs for more than a decade, and Doctoral Programs for the last several years.

  • Present Day

photo of the main floor of the library taken from the mezzanine levelLocated on the second floor of Kellenberg Hall, the JET Library supports Molloy students, faculty, and staff. Degreed librarians are always available to provide individualized assistance to students and faculty across multiple service points and locations. During the fall and spring semesters, the main library is open 84 hours a week, and a librarian is available 40 hours a week at the Suffolk Center. Reference librarians and virtual Chat services are available during these hours for research assistance to anyone on or off campus.

Students or faculty from any location are welcome to take advantage of the library's instructional services by requesting group or individualized in-person or virtual instruction sessions with a librarian by submitting an online form.

  • How it Started

In September of 1955, Molloy Catholic College for Women opened its library's doors to 42 students starting their first year. At that time, the library was located in a mansion that was the original home of Molloy College.

  • Who was James E. Tobin?

You may have noticed that the Molloy Library, currently referred to as the JET Library, is named after Dr. James E. Tobin. You may have then wondered “who is Dr. Tobin?” We hope this article will give you some insight as to who Dr. James E. Tobin was.

Dr. Tobin (pictured, third from left) earned his B.A. degree from Boston College in 1925. He then went on to earn both his M.A. and PhD from Fordham University. In 1927, Dr. Tobin joined the faculty of Fordham University where he served as Chairman of the Graduate School Department of English from 1936-1946. In 1948, he came to Queens College as a faculty member in the English Department and was named Dean of the Department, in addition to Dean of the Queens College School of General Studies.

A very generous contributor to the library’s collection of books, Dr. Tobin donated many books from his own personal library. He also held several positions at the college including trustee, member of the advisory board, and instructor from 1957-1960. In 1967, the library of Molloy Catholic College for Women (as it was previously known), was then renamed the James E. Tobin Library in his honor.

Dr. Tobin was presented the prestigious Thomas Moore Association Medal in 1961 for publishing his “Dictionary of Catholic Biography.” In the year 1968, Dr. James E. Tobin passed away at the age of 63. It has been said that Dr. Tobin was known for “his warmth, integrity and spirited devotion to both students and faculty.”
