General Information


The library should be an environment for study, reflection, reading, and research. Adhering to the following common-sense guidelines will help ensure that the library remains a safe, productive and respectful place for patrons and library staff.

Anyone found displaying disruptive behaviors may be asked to leave the library by staff or Public Safety. Disruptive Behaviors of this nature could result in either library privileges being revoked, or in extreme cases, further disciplinary actions.

The following behaviors are not permitted in the library under any circumstances:

  • Cell phone use for conversations or video chats
  • Proctored online exams that require video and microphone access
  • Loud conversations or abusive language
  • Threatening or harassing behavior toward other patrons or library staff
  • Using or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Smoking of any kind - including e-cigarettes and vapes

Access and Specific Policies


The JET library is available to Molloy University students, faculty, administrators, and staff.

Guests to the Rockville Centre campus must go through the appropriate procedures with Public Safety and will have limited access to library spaces, equipment, and resources. Inside the library, by the entrance, there is a Self Checkout Kiosk that allows patrons to check out books. Directly outside the library, patrons can drop books into the Book Drop box which is available while Kellenberg Hall is open to students.

The JET Library is also open to anyone associated with an institution that participates in the Long Island Library Resources Council (LILRC) Research Loan Program (RLP). However, there are no reserve, media (DVD), or computer privileges.

Access to the physical library spaces does not grant access to digital or electronic resources, equipment, or services. Access to library-licensed electronic resources is limited to current Molloy students, faculty, administrators, and staff and/or those who have both an active Molloy email address and Canvas credentials.

  • Alumni Access

    Visit: Molloy alumni are welcome to visit the James E. Tobin Library on the 2nd floor of Kellenberg Hall during scheduled library hours. Stop by the Public Safety Office in the Maria Regina Annex first to obtain a visitor’s pass.

    Borrow: Alumni may borrow up to 3 books at one time from the Circulating Collection. The loan period is 14 days with ONE optional renewal period of 14 days for a total of 28 days. Materials from the Reference, Media, and Reserve Collections may not be borrowed. A Molloy ID is required to borrow books. Alumni who no longer have student IDs can acquire an alumni ID at the Public Safety Office. Visit the Patron Services Desk in the Library to activate your ID for library use.

    Computers: Alumni are free to use the computers in the Main Reference Room. Ask the librarian for guest login credentials.

    Print: Due to recent changes in campus equipment (Fall 2023), alumni are not currently able to use the printers.

    Research: Anyone, including Alumni, may search JETfind; however, access to resources is restricted to current Molloy students, faculty, and staff.

    Scan: Alumni may use the Scannx scanner, located in the Main Reference Room; users may scan documents/images to a USB drive, Google Drive, smartphone, or send to email.

    WiFi: Alumni may connect their personal devices to the Molloy University WiFi.

  • Code of Conduct

    The following applies to all library locations and spaces on the Rockville Centre campus and at the Suffolk Center extension.

    Cell Phones

    • Use of cell phones is prohibited anywhere in the James E. Tobin Library at Molloy University
    • Please place your cell phone on quiet or vibrate.
    • If you receive a call while in the library, please exit the library before answering it.

     Children

    • Children under the age of sixteen must be accompanied by an adult.
    • Children are not to be left unattended in the library at any time.
    • Children who are disruptive (and the accompanying adult) will be asked to leave the library.

     Food/Beverage

    • Hot meals are not permitted in the library, but cold snacks are allowed.
    • Non-alcoholic beverages in a covered, spill-proof container or bottle are allowed.
    • Eating and drinking is not permitted at/near:
      • Computers
      • Printers & Scanners
      • Aisles & Book Stacks
    • Please dispose of any food and beverage-related trash in the trash baskets located throughout the library. Report any spills that may occur to library personnel immediately so that the spill can be cleaned as quickly as possible.  
    Meals may be consumed at other places on campus such as the Anselma Room, located on the 1st floor of Kellenberg Hall and the Public Square Coffee Bar and Quick Byte Café, both located on the first floor of the Public Square building. Meals may also be consumed in the lounge area of Information Commons located on the second floor of the Public Square Building.

     Lost and Found

    • Please inquire at the Patron Services desk for lost or found items.
    • At the end of the day, items are turned over to Public Safety (516-323-3500).

     Noise in the Library

    • The JET library is a place for learning and research and is designed to be a quiet & comfortable space. There are designated quiet areas that have a zero talking policy. The group study room is available for group learning and collaboration but noise levels need to remain low.
    • If a library patron complains of noise or disturbance to library staff, staff will ask the library patron(s) involved to move or lower their volume.
    • If library staff receive a second complaint about the same patron(s), they will be asked to leave the library. If that patron(s) refuses, Public Safety will be called.

     Personal Belongings

    The library is not responsible for any personal materials that are left unattended by patrons of the library. Please take precautions to ensure the safety of your personal belongings ie. purses, computers, wallets, keys and other materials. Library staff cannot hold/pass along any personal materials ie. books, book bags, computers. The library does not take responsibility for theft, damage or loss of personal materials. Any unattended personal materials will be reported to Public Safety at 516-323-3500. 

  • Computers, Printers, and Scanners

    A current and valid Canvas login is required to sign in to all computers in the library and on campus.

    Computers and printers located in the Reference Room of the library are strictly for research purposes only. These computers are equipped with Microsoft Office, any work done on these computers cannot be saved, but can be sent to your email account or saved on a flash drive or cloud based system like Google Drive or Dropbox. There are additional computers and printers located in the Library Instruction Rooms located on the first and second floors of the Library. These computers are also equipped with Microsoft Office and may be used as long as there isn't a Library Class Session scheduled.

    Printers are available on the first and second floors of the library for patron use. Printers are located by the reference computers and in Library Instruction Rooms A and B. There is no charge to print. As part of the Sustainability Institute at Molloy University kindly think before printing. The library is not responsible for any printed materials that are not retrieved from printers in a timely manner. If there is a paper jam in any of the printers, or if additional copy paper is needed, please contact library personnel at the Patron Service desk. 

    In addition to the scan function on the Multifunction printers, there is a stand alone scanner in the main room and on the main floor of the library. If assistance is required, please see staff on duty.

    Wireless internet is available in all areas of the library and on campus.

  • Electronic Resources Access

    The JET library has a variety of collections including physical books and media, electronic resources, unique collections, and archives and special collections. Almost all these collections can be found through JETfind, the library's discovery system, while electronic resources can be found in our subscription databases.

    Access to electronic resources is provided to current Molloy students, faculty, and staff. Current Molloy Canvas credentials are required to login to on-campus computers and to access library materials from off-campus.  Learn more about the Login for Library Access screen.

    In order to obtain materials not held in the collections, students and faculty may request items through Molloy's Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) or leverage the library's Research Loan Program (RLP) to reserve and retrieve books from one of over 100 locally participating institutions.

  • Information Commons: Additional Guidelines

    The Code of Conduct covers inappropriate behavior, noise levels, children, and other areas. Please see it above. 

    The Information Commons is open to Molloy faculty, students, administrators, and staff. Printers and laptop stations are available as well as desktop PCs. Two desktop PCs are equipped with a scanner. Color printing is available by request only and limited to 10 pages per day. The Information Commons offers wireless internet for laptop, tablet, and mobile-device users.

    The Information Commons is a creative and open space for research, relaxation, and collaboration. Please adhere to the following additional guidelines in order to maintain a pleasant and safe environment.

    Supplies: The Information Commons is equipped with basic office supplies for students' needs including markers, erasers, paper clips, tape, scissors, hole punchers, and staplers. Please ask the librarian for assistance.

    Study Rooms: Four study rooms are available for students and can hold up to six people (one of the rooms can accommodate up to 8 people). Each room is equipped with a white board and a one-touch screen computer mounted on the wall. Rooms are assigned on a first come, first served basis unless the group desires a guarantee of availability. During the Spring and Fall semesters, study rooms can be reserved up to a week in advance. In the event that a student is late, the room will be held for 15 minutes. Please check the Study Room Policies for more information.

    Please keep food and beverage use to a minimum and dispose of all trash. No food is allowed in the study rooms. Please keep cell phone use to a minimum to ensure a comfortable workspace for all. Be respectful of students using the study rooms and keep the noise level down. 

  • Information Commons: Study Rooms

    Study rooms are open whenever the Public Square building is open.

    A valid Molloy ID card is required to borrow these items. Laptops may also be borrowed for a two-hour time period when IT staff are available. Both a driver's license (or equivalent) and a valid Molloy ID card are required to borrow laptops.  

    During spring and fall semesters, Monday through Thursday 11am-5pm, reservations are required. At all other times, study rooms are first-come, first-served. 

    • Reservations may be made up to two days in advance. Example: On Monday, reservations are open for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
    • Reservations are limited to one per day and three per week.
    • The names of all members of the study group must be included in the reservation request.
    • All study group members must check in at the Information Commons Desk before entering the study room.
    • In the event that a student is late, their reservation will be honored for 15 minutes.

    Reservations may NOT be made for these four rooms for Tutoring Services sessions (Tutoring Services tutors, please see Kimberly Havens for more information.)

  • Laptops (In-Library)

    Library laptops are for in-library use only. IT at the Information Commons lends out laptops  and chromebooks (for testing) that can be taken out of the space. If you require a laptop to use for a semester, please contact Student Affairs.

    • Laptops can be reserved Monday - Thursday 8am - 9pm, Friday 8am - 7pm,  Saturday 10am- 5pm, and Sunday 12pm - 7pm. 
    • A valid Molloy ID card must be presented in order to checkout laptops and they may be borrowed for a four-hour time period. 
    • Patrons can only borrow one laptop at a time.
    • Patrons with outstanding fines cannot checkout laptops. Overdue fines for laptops will be $10.00 per hour.
    • Laptops and chargers cannot be taken out of the library.
    • Laptops may only be used for academic purposes. Any work done on these computers cannot be saved, but can be sent to an email account or saved on flash drives. All files are automatically deleted when the computer is turned off. Patrons can not add any personal software or alter any software loaded on the laptop or change its existing configurations.
    • Reservations may be made up to 1 week in advance and are limited to ONE 4-hour time slot per day. In the event that a patron is late, his or her reservation will be honored for 15 minutes.
    • Laptops should not be left unattended in the library. The library will not be responsible for a lost or stolen laptop. It is the patron’s full responsibility and fiscal liability for all costs associated with damage to the laptop computer or its associated peripheral equipment or its replacement costs should it be lost or stolen.
    • Patrons must return laptops and chargers to the Patron Services/Reserves staff. A laptop may not be left unattended at the Patron Services/Reserves or Circulation desk. Please report any computer hardware or software malfunctions to Patron Reserves staff when the laptop is returned.
    • If patrons experience problems with laptop hardware, applications or have other questions, they should ask for assistance at the Patron Services desk. Patrons will be fiscally responsible for any damage to a laptop if they attempt to troubleshoot problems.

  • Library Card / Molloy ID

    A valid Molloy ID card serves as your library card. It is required every time to check out any physical materials, this includes items that have been placed on Reserve. Patrons without a valid Molloy ID card will not be permitted to utilize in-library use-only materials or check out circulating materials. Please be advised that there is an overnight activation period before being able to use a new ID card in the Library. ID cards may be obtained at the Public Safety (516-323-3500). There is no overnight activation period for electronic resources such as databases, collections, and eReserves. All may be accessed immediately on or off-campus with a valid Canvas login (from Molloy University).

  • Library Spaces & Accessibility

    The JET library is located on the 2nd floor of Kellenberg Hall on the Rockville Centre campus. Kellenberg Hall was built in the 1950s and was first occupied in 1958. There is a ramp entrance located on the south side of the building that leads into the Anselma Room. Additional entrances at the back of Kellenberg Hall will bring a patron into the basement level. There is one elevator in Kellenberg Hall that can be used to get to the library's entrance on the second floor. There is one elevator in the Casey Centers that can be used to get to the 2nd floor and a bridge that connects Casey Center to Kellenberg Hall.

    Inside the library, there are three floors. These three floors do not always match the floors of Kellenberg Hall. The library's first floor is on the second floor of Kellenberg Hall. The library's second floor does not correlate with a floor of Kellenberg Hall. The library's third floor is on the third floor of Kellenberg Hall and has only emergency fire exits, no entrance.

    The JET Library provides a variety of electronic resources for students, faculty, and staff of Molloy. JET librarians and staff create accessible digital content such as video tutorials with closed captioning. In most cases, third-party vendors are responsible for providing accessible content in their databases, journals, videos, etc.

    • A Lost Item Replacement Cost Fee and a Lost Item Processing Fee of $5 are charged for materials that have been lost 

  • Reserves Policy (Students)

    Reserves and eReserves (Course Materials) can be accessed on a course-by-course basis via Canvas. Students can access eReserve materials from anywhere with an available internet connection. All book and media reserves can be picked up from the Circulation Desk by asking a library staff member. 

    Policies and Procedures:

    • To check out reserve materials, you must be enrolled for the current semester with an updated Molloy ID.
    • Most reserve materials are used in the library only, except for those books reserved for doctoral students.
    • Students can only request two Reserve books at a time.
    • Course Reserve items may be checked out for either two or four hours depending on the reserve policy for that item.
    • Reserve materials may be renewed once as needed if no other students are waiting to use those reserve materials.
    • Reserve materials must be returned fifteen minutes before the library closes. There is a fine for reserve items returned not returned by the designated time.

  • Reserve Policy (Faculty)

    Reserves and eReserves (Course Materials) can be accessed on a course-by-course basis via Canvas. Students can access eReserve materials from anywhere with an available internet connection. 

    1. Placing Materials on Reserves / eReserves
      1. Login to Canvas to access and manage your reserves.
      2. Materials are placed on reserve at the request of faculty members for the educational, non-commercial use of students enrolled in a course.  Access is limited to the faculty member for a particular course as well as the students enrolled in that course for which the items have been placed on reserve. As stated in the ALA Model Policy, "materials placed on reserve by faculty are not intended to constitute all of the materials assigned for the course."

    2. Materials that may be placed on reserve
      1. According to fair use guidelines, the following materials may be placed on reserve at the request of faculty:
        1. Course reserve materials that are intended for non-commercial educational use.
        2. Copies of materials that are legally owned by the Library or a faculty member.
        3. A faculty member's personal copy of copyrighted A/V material that is a commercially produced audio/video recording or streaming videos available through the Library’s databases.
        4. Materials available in the public domain.
        5. Unpublished materials (such as theses, dissertations, power point presentations, faculty notes or student papers) with written permission from the copyright owner.
        6. Books and multimedia not owned by the library or the faculty member. If the library or the faculty member does not own the item that is to be placed on reserve, the library will purchase it if possible and place it on reserve.
      2. The policies governing E-Reserves are based on the provisions of fair use (17 U.S.C. 107).  All materials placed on E-Reserve will be at the request of Molloy faculty members for the expressed purpose of non-commercial educational use. Authorized access to E-Reserve material is available free of charge to Molloy faculty and students (on and off campus) under one or more of the following conditions:
        1. Access is limited to the faculty member who placed the material on reserve and the students enrolled in that course.
        2. Access to Reserve material for a particular course is limited to the duration of that course.
        3. The material on reserve is available in a database to which the library subscribes electronically.
        4. The material is available in the public domain.
        5. An individual chapter from a book or an article from a periodical that is placed on E-Reserve is from an item legally obtained by the faculty member placing it on reserve or by the library.
        6. The total amount of material made available on E-Reserve for a specific course, as a matter of fair use, is limited to a small portion of the total assigned reading for that particular course.
        7. No material will be placed on E-Reserve without copyright permission when the nature, scope or extent of this material is judged by the Molloy Library to exceed the reasonable limits of fair use.
        8. Permission must be obtained from the copyright holder by the faulty member who intends to keep any reserve materials for a specific course on E-Reserve for consecutive academic terms, or if the reserve item in question is a required or optional reading for an individual course taught in multiple sections by many instructors.
      3. Audiovisual and other multimedia materials are subject to copyright protection. In the Second Report of the Register of Copyrights (January 1988), it states, "reproduction of music, pictorial and graphic works, motion pictures and most audiovisual works for private study, scholarship, and research is to be governed by fair use under Section 107"  of the Copyright Act. Under section 108 (d) and section 108(e) it states that copying of audiovisual materials for use in reserve collections is generally justified under fair use guidelines. In accordance with copyright guidelines, the following audiovisual materials may be placed on reserve:
        1. Copies of commercially produced A/V materials that were legally purchased by the library.
        2. A faculty member's personal copy of copyrighted A/V material that is a commercially produced recording.
        3. Streaming videos available through the library’s databases.
        4. Copies of off-air broadcast recordings (for a period not exceeding 45 days) for use by students in a specific class. All copies of such off-air recordings must include a notice of permission from the copyright holder for the broadcasted program.
      4. Other: The library will place a faculty member's personal copy of a textbook or course pack on reserve for one semester. Permission must be obtained from the copyright holder by the faculty member if the same reserve item(s) are to be kept on reserve for the same course for consecutive academic terms.
    3. Policies for Placing Materials on Reserves
      1. Submission Deadlines - The Library will make sure that any reserve materials submitted before the deadlines are available for your students on the first day of semester.
        1. August 15 for the Fall Semester
        2. December 10 for the Winter Session
        3. December 15 for the Spring Semester
        4. May 10 for Summer Sessions
      2. Processing time - The normal processing time is two business days. Requests received during the first weeks of a semester will be processed in the order they are received.
      3. Limits
        1.  Print reserve lists are limited to 40 titles per course.
        2. Each request for a particular course is restricted to one article per issue of a periodical and no more than 5 articles from the same periodical title not own by the library.
        3. All reserve items will be removed at the end of a semester and cannot be placed  for more than two consecutive semester until copyright is obtained from the publishers or copyright owners.
        4. Photocopies of an article or book chapter provided by faculty to be placed on E-Reserves must be clean and legible one sided copies.
        5. We will place a maximum of 2 copies of physical reserve material.
    4. Things to think about before using copyright materials: 
      1. The responsibilities of Molloy faculty in regard to Copyright:
        1. All course materials submitted by instructors must support course related teaching, scholarship or research.
        2. Under the fair use guidelines, the amount copied and used should be reasonable and only be the amount needed to accomplish a specific educational purpose. The Reserve Coordinator will provide information resources and guidance to faculty members to help them evaluate any limits on the amount of material that they may place on reserve.

        4. Faculty members are responsible for evaluating whether the use of a copyrighted work requires permission or qualifies as fair use. The reserve coordinator will provide information resources and guidance to faculty members to help them in evaluating the qualifications of a specific use as fair use. When permission is required, a faculty member is expected to make any necessary arrangements.
      2. What counts as fair use for educators?
        1. Fair use does not mean free use. Fair use allows limited use of copyrighted materials for the purposes of teaching and research without getting permission from the copyright holder. It doesn't mean that all educational use is considered fair use.
        2. Please keep in mind that creative commons licenses and public domain repositories of images are not subject to fair use due to the rights they carry.  Although fair use is determined on a case by case basis, ultimate responsibility lies with the user not the library.

      3. What is protected by copyright? Copyright protects most creative works but to qualify for copyright protection, a work must satisfy two requirements: it must be original, and it must be "fixed in a tangible medium of expression". In order for a work to be "fixed in a tangible medium of expression", it must be recorded using some form of physical medium, whether it is on paper, canvas, or computer disk. Copyright protects
        1. literary works
        2. musical works
        3. dramatic works
        4. pantomimes and choreographic works
        5. pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works
        6. motion pictures and other audiovisual works
        7. sound recordings
        8. architectural works
      4. What is not protected by copyright? Copyright law does not apply to most of the works in the public domain or to works that do not qualify for copyright protection, as stated in the Section 102 of the Copyright Act. These include:
        1. ideas, concepts, discoveries, theories, and hypotheses
        2. procedures, processes, system, methods of operation
        3. scientific principles, theorems, mathematical formulae, laws of nature
        4. facts, information, data, know-how
        5. titles, names, short phrases and slogans, common symbols, lettering, slight variations of typographic ornamentation, design, or listings of ingredients or contents.

  • Security Gates

    There are security gates at the entrance to the JET library. The security gate will alarm when either entering or leaving the library with library-owned materials. If the alarm does sound, please see library staff.

    In the event an alarm is triggered, the following procedure will be followed:

    • The patron will be asked if he or she has any library materials from the James E. Tobin Library. 
    • If so, the patron will be asked to present these materials to library personnel to confirm that the material(s) have been checked out and properly demagnetized. 
    • The patron will also be asked if they have checked out materials from another library, as this too can trigger the door alarm.
    • The patron will be asked to go through the security gate again without the library materials to see if alarm is sounded. 
    • If no alarm sounds on the second pass, the patron is cleared to leave the library with the checked out library materials. 
    • If the alarm does trigger, the patron will be asked to remove all materials from their bag and go through the security gates with the bag.

    Note: The alarm can be triggered by materials other than JET library materials, including materials from other libraries.
