For Alex Brosnan, the path to leading Molloy University’s newest athletic program began long before the Lions announced their inaugural women’s flag football season.
It began on the baseball diamond.
An All-Conference player during his time at Molloy, Brosnan went on to build a coaching career spanning the junior college, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division I levels before returning to his alma mater as a pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. His work helped shape the baseball program into the dominant force it remains today.
But while Brosnan’s professional career continued on the diamond, another chapter was taking shape off of it.
Over a 15-year playing career, Brosnan established himself as one of Long Isand’s accomplished flag football quarterbacks, becoming the youngest inductee into the Long Island Flag Football Hall of Fame and playing on more than 75 championship teams across a variety of formats throughout the United States.
Now, those two paths have converged.
“Molloy has always been home and this is truly a full circle moment for me and my family,” Brosnan said. “Flag football is the fastest growing sport in the world and this will be an incredible opportunity to showcase our world class institution and put an even bigger spotlight on women’s sports. Molloy and flag football fit perfectly together and I am looking forward to competing for championships in our inaugural season in the spring of 2028.”
Much like his journey in baseball, Brosnan’s passion for flag football eventually evolved from playing the game to helping to grow it. Today, he serves on the leadership council of the Long Island Flag Football League, where he contributes to league operations, rule development, and youth clinics.
That combination of playing, coaching, and program-building experience will now come together as Brosnan leads Molloy into a new era.
“Alex brings a really unique combination to this position,” Director of Athletics Michael Grasso said. “He knows Molloy from his time as a student-athlete and baseball coach, he understands our culture, and he understands the type of student-athlete we want to recruit and develop. At the same time, his knowledge and experience in flag football is extensive – he has competed at a high level and has a deep understanding of the game. This combination made him a great fit to lead this program, and we are excited to see what he can build here at Molloy.”
His experience developing championship-caliber athletes and programs, familiarity with Molloy and its culture, and extensive knowledge of flag football strategy, player development, preparation, and competition give Brosnan a unique foundation to lead the university’s newest athletic program.
The inaugural season will kick off in spring 2028. Until then, Brosnan’s focus is clear: identify the next generation of Lions, develop them into a team, and establish the foundation for a new era of Molloy Athletics.
