As the US population becomes more diverse, the number of bilingual people needing services from speech-language pathologists continues to outgrow the number of bilingual service providers. This presentation will clarify myths surrounding use of interpreters and prepare monolingual and bilingual SLPs to determine difference vs. disorder.

- Participants will name and describe three sociocultural factors to consider during a bilingual assessment.
- Participants will provide three questions to aid in determining difference versus disorder in bilingual assessment.
Speaker Bio

Jackie Rodriguez
Jackie Rodriguez (she/her/ella) is a medical bilingual speech language pathologist based in Atlanta, Georgia. She received her Master of Science in Communications Sciences & Disorders from Georgia State University. Over the course of her career, Jackie has had a broad range of experiences working across the lifespan in both medical and educational settings as well as in travel therapy. She currently works full PRN in inpatient rehab and outpatient rehab. Jackie is African American and Afro Puerto Rican. She is a sequential L1 English and L2 Spanish speaker.
