Women’s Flag Football Set to Join Molloy Athletics in Fall 2027
Molloy University is proud to announce the addition of Women’s Flag Football as a varsity sport, with the program set to begin during the 2027-28 academic year. Student-athletes will begin practicing in the Fall of 2027 before officially beginning competition in the Spring of 2028. Recognized by the NCAA as one of the fastest-growing sports in the country at multiple levels, Women’s Flag Football marks a new era of competition and growth for female student-athletes on campus.
A fast-paced variation of traditional football, flag football replaces tackling with the removal of flags from an opponent’s belt, creating a non-contact game that emphasizes speed, strategy, and teamwork.
The rise in popularity of the sport reflects a significant shift in the athletics landscape, as it continues to gain recognition on quite a large scale. Earlier this year, the NCAA took another major step toward making Women’s Flag Football a championship sport by approving legislation to establish the first NCAA Women’s Flag Football Championship, which is set to start in 2028. The sport’s growing prominence will soon reach the international stage, with flag football set to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.
“We are excited to bring Women’s Flag Football to Molloy and provide another outstanding avenue for student-athletes to compete, grow, and represent the Lions with pride,” said Michael Grasso, Director of Athletics. “The rapid growth of this sport across the country makes this an exciting time to expand our athletic offerings and welcome a new generation of student-athletes to our community.”
Over the coming months, Molloy Athletics will focus on building the foundation for the program, recruiting student-athletes who will become the first to wear the Lions uniform for Women’s Flag Football. The inaugural team will have the chance to make history at Molloy, helping define the culture and future of the program from day one.
Beyond what they accomplish on the field, the impact of this new program will extend throughout the University community.
“The addition of Women’s Flag Football to Molloy Athletics represents an exciting new chapter for our University,” said Janine Biscari, Vice President for Student Affairs. “This sport reflects our commitment to expanding opportunities for women on campus, fostering leadership, teamwork, and competitive excellence. We are thrilled to welcome future student-athletes who will help build this program from the ground up and create a lasting legacy for generations of Lions to come.”
More information about how to get involved will be released soon. For any questions, please reach out to the Molloy Athletics department, athletics@molloy.edu.
