Professor Newland Appointed to NHCC Board of Directors
Governor Kathy Hochul has appointed Dr. Lisa Zakiya Newland, a Molloy University Professor and Chair of the University’s Social Work Department, to the Board of Directors of the Nassau Health Care Corporation (NHCC). Dr. Newland was recommended for the position by the Senate. Eleven individuals will serve on the Board.
“Molloy University is proud of the impactful work of our faculty inside and outside of the classroom, and it is fitting that Professor Lisa Newland of Molloy University has been named to the Nassau Health Care Corporation Board for her expertise and leadership in the area of social work,” said Molloy University President James Lentini. “Governor Hochul’s appointment recognizes Dr. Newland’s s significant contributions.”
According to her official website, the Governor is looking for the individuals appointed to the Board to “usher in a new era of stronger oversight, enhanced accountability and renewed focus on patient care at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), Nassau County’s only public hospital.”
“Public hospitals are essential pillars of our communities, and Nassau University Medical Center deserves a governance structure that reflects its critical mission,” said Governor Hochul. “With the recent appointments the new NHCC Board is further positioned to tackle long-standing challenges and deliver better outcomes for both patients and taxpayers.”
Beyond her duties as a professor and department chair, Dr. Newland’s career spans clinical social work, community engagement, mental health administration, and educational leadership. As a native New Yorker and longtime advocate for equity and justice, she brings a deep understanding of systems of care and a commitment to empowering underserved populations. She currently serves as Convener for Black Family Summit, Inc., and President of the Nassau Suffolk chapter of the National Association of Black Social Workers.
“I am honored that this appointment will utilize my expertise as a social worker,” said Dr. Newland. “Being selected by the NYS Senate is an acknowledgement of my leadership skills which are grounded by personal and professional values, and a sincere commitment to underserved populations. I look forward to engaging with the diverse stakeholders of Nassau University Medical Center in our collective efforts to improve operations and ensure a sustainable future for our county's public hospital.”
The NHCC is required to complete a comprehensive study by December 1, 2026, outlining options to strengthen NUMC’s operations and sustainability. The new NHCC board is expected to meet in the coming days to begin executing its oversight responsibilities.
“With the addition of Dr. Lisa Newland, the NHCC Board reflects the diversity of talents and dedication needed to meet the moment,” said State Senator Siela Bynoe. “I look forward to working with all of the members to ensure Nassau’s only public hospital can deliver safe, equitable and high-quality care for all who rely on it.”
