Forum Shines Light on Advocacy

On October 23rd, at Molloy’s Hays Theatre, the Nurses Association of the Counties of Long Island, in collaboration with Molloy University, The Barbara H. Hagan School of Nursing and Health Sciences, Molloy Nursing Student Association, and the American Nurses Association – New York (ANA-NY) hosted a Legislative Forum to bring together nurse leaders, nurses, students, community leaders and legislators for a meaningful dialogue on pressing healthcare priorities.

Over 150 people attended the event that featured two panel discussions on topics important to nursing, health, and social care in our communities. The first panel consisted of ANA-NY Nurse Leaders Dr. Anna George, Dr. Giselle Gerardi, and Ms. Kimberly Velez and the second panel included NYS Assembly Members Michael Durso, Edward Ra, and Judy Griffin. Both panels addressed issues such as the environmental impact on health, nursing workforce development, and expanding access to care.

Molloy’s Director of the PhD in Nursing Program, Jennifer Emilie Mannino, PhD, RN, CNE, closed the forum with the following remarks: “Nurses are first and foremost patient advocates. Getting involved in advocacy is not just an option; it is a responsibility. Your experiences can illuminate the gaps in our system and help develop solutions that improve patient outcomes and advance the nursing profession. By engaging in advocacy, you can influence legislation, promote equitable access to care, and ensure that the voices of those you serve are heard. Even small actions can create a ripple effect. Whether it’s reaching out to your representatives, participating in local health initiatives, or joining professional organizations - your involvement matters.”
