Resident Assistant Job Description

The Resident Assistant (RA) position focuses on enhancing the quality of life in Fitzgerald Hall and Maria Regina Hall, including fostering community, providing academic support, and ensuring a safe and secure environment for residents. The position requires an individual who is flexible enough to assume a variety of roles as dictated by the changing needs of students. It is crucial that an individual be able to relate well to others and handle administrative responsibilities. The RA is more than just a friendly presence; she/he is the crucial link in creating an environment in which students develop independence, learn to live cooperatively with others, and thrive as students. 

Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to, understand and enforce the policies found in the residence life handbook and student handbook
  • Be available, visible and accessible to students in the wing and/or building to establish and maintain positive relationships within the community.
  • Enforce and adhere to both quiet hours and 24-hour courtesy hours
  • Enforce and adhere to 24-hour quiet hours during finals
  • Be sensitive to the issue of confidentiality
  • Provide on-duty coverage when the residence hall is open and occupied. This includes, but is not limited to, long weekends, Thanksgiving Break, intersession, spring recess, and Easter Break
  • Participate in a rotating, on-duty schedule
    • Duty Coverage - 7 Days a week
      • Monday - Thursday: 7:00PM - 7:00AM
        • RAs must be in their building between 7:00PM - 7:00AM.
        • Between 7:00PM - 11:00PM, RAs can choose to remain in their room with their door open or be in the building lounge. 3 rounds must be completed during this time.
      • Friday - Sunday: 24 hours per day, starting 7:00PM Friday - 7:00AM Monday
        • RAs must be in their building between  7:00PM - 7:00AM
        • Between 7:00PM - 12:00AM on Friday and Saturday, RAs can choose to remain in their room with their door open or be in the building lounge. 4 rounds must be completed during this time.
        • On Sundays, RAs will be in their room with their door open or be in the building lounge between 7:00PM - 11:00PM. 3 rounds must be completed during this time.
    • The RA on duty must carry and answer the Duty Phone and have the Duty Binder with them while in the building or responding to any situation.
    • Respond to emergency situations that arise in the building. *If a snow day occurs or the college closes unexpectedly, RAs must assume a 24 hour duty rotation.
    • Be available for special duty assignments that include, but are not limited to: Orientation, Safe Halloween, Move-In Days, Homecoming, Open House and Commencement events.
  • Follow other duty procedures and tasks as assigned by the Office of Residence Life.
  • Adhere to, understand, and familiarize residents with community safety, emergency and fire evacuation protocols.
  • Report and document in a neat, timely and orderly fashion all incidents, concerns, and situations that threaten the health, safety, and security of the hall and the residents. All Incident Reports MUST be submitted with 24 hours of the incident occurring. Emergency situations must be immediately reported to the professional staff member on duty, the Residence Hall Director, and the Coordinator of Residence Life.
  • Complete assigned paperwork and administrative tasks in a timely manner.
  • Be familiar with and be able to explain housing and maintenance procedures.
  • Utilize master cards only as outlined in established procedures.
  • Assist the Office of Residence Life with the preparation of residence halls for openings and closings.
  • Attend the entirety of RA training days in August and January and any other trainings that may arise throughout the year.
  • Participate in individual evaluation sessions each semester with the Coordinator of Residence Life and Residence Hall Director.
  • Arrive early before student Move-In Days and stay late after the closing of the hall to assist in opening and closing tasks.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Attend bi-weekly 1 on 1 meetings with the Residence Hall Director.
  • Hold monthly floor meetings and additional floor meetings as necessary.
  • Resolve conflicts between roommates or building residents. This includes conflict resolution and contracting roommate agreements.
  • Maintain 10 "Open Door" hours per week in room with door open.
  • Develop four (4) programs per semester and two (2) community builder events for your wing per semester.  All programs must have an Event Planning Form submitted 2 weeks in advance of the program and be approved by the Office of Residence Life.
  • Keep coursework and other commitments at a reasonable level. Other membership affiliations must be discussed with the Residence Hall Director. Outside employment is permitted, but may not exceed 15 hours per week. 
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Residence Hall Director, Coordinator of Residence Life, and/or Vice President for Student Affairs.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a full-time, enrolled student.
  • Must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above at all times
  • Take no more than 17 credits per semester (If you need to take more than 17 credits, you must get approval from the Residence Hall Director).
  • Must be in good standing with the college; academically, socially, residentially and financially.
  • Demonstrate good oral and written communication skills and superb customer service skills.
  • Ability to serve as a role model and mentor for residents.
  • Must be familiar with campus and community resources.
  • Must be familiar with dining services and meal plan options.
