The Transfiguration of Jesus – A Time to Listen to God’s Voice

In the name of the Father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit.

Opening Hymn:

O word of God Come into this space;

O word of God come send us your grace.

Open our minds show us your truth;

Transform our lives a new.

We have begun the Lenten Journey, a season of grace. A time of prayer and spiritual renewal. This second week of lent we reflect on the transfiguration of Jesus, an invitation to listen, to listen to God's voice. Let us pray that we too may be strengthened to overcome all our fears that surround us through his grace.

Let us pray: Loving God, you give us forty days to journey into the inner mountains of our hearts and lives.  Let these sacred days be a time when we seek and find you with in each of us. Make this time of Lent a time to listen to your voice and be guided by your spirit. We ask through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Gospel: Luke 9:28B-36

Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray.
While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white.
And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem. Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
But he did not know what he was saying. While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my chosen Son; listen to him." After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They fell silent and did not at that time tell anyone what they had seen.

The Gospel of the Lord - Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

In today's Gospel, the voice from heaven speaks to the disciples saying, "Listen to him." The Transfiguration was a focused moment for the disciples when they heard God speaking to them and experienced Jesus in glory. They most certainly left this focused moment with a new appreciation for the importance of Jesus' words even if they did not yet understand everything that he had taught them. During Lent, we are invited to consider our attentiveness to Jesus and to one another. In the pace and noise that often characterizes our life, how well do we listen to one another? What opportunities do we have for quiet prayer? In the blinding light did Peter know what he was saying? Think of some times that you have seen the divine, not in a transfiguration, but in the ordinary. Please share your experiences with others.

Please share, any word or phrase or thought that inspires you from the Gospel reading.
