Music/Music Ed/Music Therapy Faculty

Dr. Suzanne Sorel, D.A., M.T.-B.C., L.C.A.T. is the Music Department Chair and Associate Dean and Director of Graduate Music Therapy at Molloy College where she has been teaching since 1991. She is also professor of music therapy and the Director of Education and Training at the Rebecca Center for Music Therapy at Molloy College. Between 1990 and 2003, Dr. Sorel practiced music therapy at the Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy at New York University and has achieved Level III Certification in the Nordoff-Robbins approach. Dr. Sorel has worked with a variety of populations including children and adults with autism, developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, speech and language delays and psychiatric disorders. Her research interests relate to improvisational music therapy in the clinic as well as in the hands-on training of music therapists, music therapy educators and future music therapists. She has presented her work both nationally and internationally and has published several studies related to research findings as well as six compositions.

Seung-A Kim, Ph.D., L.C.A.T., M.T.-B.C. is the Director of Undergraduate Music Therapy and an Assistant Professor at Molloy College and an analytical music therapist at Agape School in N.Y., focusing on work with Korean-American families. She received her doctoral degree from Temple University, specializing in multicultural music therapy. Over the past 15 years, Dr. Kim has worked with a variety of ethnic/racial groups and has also been both academic and clinical supervisor. Her specialties include Culturally Informed Music Therapy (CIMT), cross-cultural supervision and Analytical Music Therapy (AMT). She is the author of several chapters in peer-reviewed books and has presented nationally and internationally.

John Carpente, Ph.D., L.C.A.T., M.T.-B.C. is an Assistant Professor of Music and Music Therapy at Molloy College, Founder and Executive Director of the Rebecca Center for Music Therapy and is the Founding Clinical Director of the Center for Autism and Child Development at Molloy College. In addition, he is the owner of Developmental Music Health Services, LLC and is the founding music therapist and creator of the DIR-based music therapy program at a prominent school in New York City, where he has worked closely with Dr. Stanley I. Greenspan since 2006. Dr. Carpente received his Master of Arts from the Steinhardt School of Education and Human Development at New York University, where he also completed his advanced clinical certification in Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy. He later went on to complete his doctoral degree in music therapy from Temple University. In 2011, Dr. Carpente received the Faculty Recognition Award for excellence in teaching in the Music Therapy graduate program at Molloy College.

Lora Heller, M.S., L.C.A.T., M.T.-B.C. is Special Projects Coordinator and adjunct instructor for Music Therapy at Molloy College. Lora has focused mainly in early childhood music therapy in both medical and educational settings. After completing her Master of Science in Special/Deaf Education, she developed Baby Fingers LLC - a music and sign language program for families with young children. Lora has supervised and trained music therapy students from Molloy College and elsewhere and has presented at conferences both regionally and nationally. A member of the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), Lora serves on the New York State Task Force on Occupational Regulation (NYSTF), regarding implementation of requirements for the New York State Licensure in Creative Arts Therapy. The author of seven sign language books for children, co-author of a chapter in Meeting the Needs of Our Clients Creatively, a college textbook about music therapy with the dying and bereaved, and author of a recent study about music therapy in interdisciplinary care.

Daniel McGann, B.F.A., M.A. is a full-time Assistant Professor of Music at Molloy College. He chaired the Music Department from 1990-1994 and again from 2000-2006. Mr. McGann has also chaired Molloy College's Committee on Faculty Scholarship and Academic Advancement, the Global Education advisory board and is currently serving on the Molloy College Faculty Council as well as being the college's Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR). Applauded by the New York Times for his "....facility and sensitivity for the instrument...distinct tonal character.... and considerable technique." A classical guitarist, Dan has concertized extensively throughout the tri-state area as a soloist and in chamber music ensembles. His experience as a teacher, student and performing artist have contributed to a broad background in the arts, leading to an investigation of divergent paths. His research and pending publication of transcriptions has provided much insight into the music and performance practices from different historical periods as well as the investigation into women composers of lute and guitar music from the Renaissance through the nineteenth century.

Michelle Rampal, Michelle Rampal has served in the Music and Music Education degree programs at Molloy College since 2010. Her work as a music educator, saxophonist, and scholar strives to transcend traditional career boundaries.

As a music educator, Michelle Rampal has taught in a variety of educational settings. Prior to coming to Molloy College, she has taught undergraduate music majors at the Eastman School of Music, directed an acclaimed high school band program at Baldwin Senior High School on Long Island, directed a community jazz ensemble for adults in Chicago, and taught general music in the New York City Public Schools. She holds public school music teacher certificates in New York State and New Jersey. Her advanced private saxophone students have consistently been accepted to New York State's All State Wind Ensemble, All State Symphonic Band, and several prestigious music programs throughout the country. As a scholar, Michelle Rampal is concerned with developing and promoting music programs that are inclusive and attentive to diverse student populations and interests. Her research interests include the intersection of music education and culture, community music, social justice in music education, and alternative contexts for music education. As a saxophonist, Michelle Rampal has toured, recorded, and performed with a wide variety of ensembles, including the Eastman Wind Ensemble, the Eastman Jazz Ensemble, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Ray Lugo and the Boogaloo Destroyers, Brooklyn Wind Symphony, Grand Street Community Band, Brooklyn Jazz Rebellion, and the Walt Disney World Collegiate All Star Band.

Dr. Jorge Sosa is a Mexican-born composer and assistant professor of music at Molloy College. Dr. Sosa's creative interests include opera, new music, music technology and interactive electronic media. Dr. Sosa has built an international reputation as a composer. His works have been performed in Europe, the United States, New Zealand and Latin America. In 2013 the American Lyric Theater (ALT) commissioned Dr. Sosa's first full-length opera "La Reina." "La Reina" was performed in a concert version during ALT's Insight Festival in 2013 and was one of the winning pieces of the Fort Worth Opera 2015 Frontiers Festival. The "Aria a la Santa Muerte" was featured at the Opera America National Conference in 2012. Dr. Sosa's electronic music has been featured in numerous festivals and conferences around the world including SEAMUS national conference, Electronic Music Mid-West, Difrazzione Festival, MUSLAB, Foro de Música Nueva Manuel Enriquez, among others. Dr. Sosa has been the composer in residence with the NYU New Music Ensemble under the artistic direction of Dr. Esther Lamneck, during the 2014 and 2015 seasons, developing new works for ensemble, video, and interactive electronics.  Other relevant premieres include Dr. Sosa's "Domino Effect" for solo saxophone and string orchestra, performed in Carnegie Hall in 2015, his operatic setting of Man Ray's film "L'Etoile de Mer," premiered in Kansas City, receiving critical acclaim, his "Psalm of David" premiered by celebrated clarinetist David Krakauer and pianist Kathy Tagg among many others. In 2012, Jorge was commissioned to write his "Song of the Last Crossing", which was included in the "Opera America Songbook". His "Trés Sonetos de Quevedo" for soprano and guitar quartet were commissioned by the Cuarteto de Guitarras de la Ciudad de México and were also selected for the 2015 Foro de Música Nueva in Mexico City. Dr. Sosa's works have been recorded and released in numerous CD's including his solo album "Plastic Time," "The Opera America Songbook", and The Mexico City Guitar Quartet's "A 5." Dr. Sosa's Refraction I for clarinet and electronics has been released in Mauricio Salguero's CD "Quirk" and Javier Vinasco's "Mexico Vol. II." Dr. Sosa has also collaborated in numerous projects with the New Zealand label "Rattle Records" including the CD's "Enceladus," with jazz trumpeter and composer Dave Lisik and "Invenium Viam" among others.
