The New Media Major is a 48 credit production based Bachelor of Science Communications degree including 15 related requirement credits in computer science, digital art, digital writing, entrepreneurship, or theory, customized to the student's individual academic path and skills. This major teaches students both critical inquiry skills (writing, speaking, analyzing, critiquing) and multiple digital production skills.
What is new media? New media refers to all media technologies invented since the television. That means computers, the internet, video games, virtual reality, memes, and so much more! Studying new media means you look at the content, histories, and cultural effects of these different kinds of media. By studying new media we can better understand things like how social media can sway a presidential election, how an app like Uber can completely change the way we work and travel, or how playing video games became something that can make you a millionaire.

Who is a New Media degree for? Our new media students are creative self-starters who want to work in one of the many fast-paced new media industries. Our program is ideal for someone who wants to sharpen their critical thinking and problem-solving skills while amping up their technical know-how. Our small class sizes and flexible curriculum (we encourage minors in areas like digital art, digital writing, computer science, and more) give students the ability to tailor their education toward the specific new media industry they want to work in. What makes new media at Molloy special is that we not only teach the theories and concepts associated with new media but also teach students how to create engaging content on a variety of platforms like Instagram and Youtube. We also teach students more specialized skills like how to make websites, tell stories using virtual reality, code for apps, edit photographs in photoshop, or design video games; and this is only the tip of the iceberg of what's offered in our courses.
