Inclusive Teacher Evaluation: Collaboration & Application

Conference Description:

The goal will be for participants to engage in exercises that support conversation  between teachers and their evaluators about teaching English learners. Participants will learn ways to address English language proficiency, appropriate scaffolds and  assessments with the goal of improving outcomes for linguistically diverse learners. (5 CTLEs Offered!)

     Key activities and outcomes of the session:

  • Scenarios of English learners -- to present the diversity of English learners, non-monolithic group, long-term ELs, ELs with learning disabilities, Refugee ELs etc.
  • Review of teacher evaluation rubrics -- to evaluate the extent to which diverse learners and appropriate teaching strategies for diverse learners are evident within teacher evaluation rubrics. Then discuss ways to work within current evaluation systems in order to be more inclusive.
  • Conversation starters / frames that support collaboration -- to practice conversations to support dialog between teachers and their evaluators.
  • Action Plan -- to create a short plan of action / application to the participant's particular teaching context.

Speaker Bio: 

Dr. Ayanna Cooper is an advocate and author for culturally and linguistically diverse learners. She is a co-author of Evaluating ALL teachers of English Learners and Students With Disabilities: Supporting Great Teaching and has contributed to various publications including WIDA's Essential Actions Handbook and Language Magazine. She has held positions as an ELL Instructional Coach, Urban Education Teacher Supervisor and ELL/Title III Director and has received awards recognizing her contributions to the field of TESOL. As an independent consultant she provides support clients with a focus on achievement for English learners. Dr. Cooper continues to highlight the importance of diverse representation, equity and access for educators and their students.

Please note that this conference is also part of a larger 4-day summer institute on, "Differentiated Instructional and Assessment Strategies for Diverse Learners" (Click here for further information). You have the option to register for four days for 3 graduate credits for $900 (Click here to register, course number: EDU 524.39) or on a non-credit basis for $495 for 2 in-service credits (click here to register). To receive graduate credit, you must attend the institute each day, do work outside the classroom and complete a project that is due within two weeks of the last session. In-service credit is based upon attendance alone.

Registration:
Please note that completing the information for this conference through a program such as My Learning Plan Inc. is mainly for you to receive permission to take this conference from your district. Once you receive permission to take the conference from your district you will still need to register for the conference. There is no connection between My Learning Plan Inc. and your official registration for this conference.

To receive graduate credit, you must attend the institute each day, do work outside the classroom and complete a project that is due within two weeks of the last session. In-service credit is based upon attendance alone.

If you do not wish to enroll in all four days, you may enroll on Thursday and Friday, July 19 & 20) for $275.

Please also note: if your district will be paying for you to attend the conference, we know that it can take some time before your district might issue a check. Therefore, it would be advisable for you to send in your registration first, even though the check from the district might not have been processed yet, to avoid being closed-out of the conference or to take advantage of the early registration discount. If multiple registrations from the same district will be paid through a purchase order, all the registrations should be sent at the same time.

Confirmation of your registration and travel directions will be sent to you upon receipt of your registration.

Refund Policy
A full refund will be granted as long as you contact us one week prior to the start of the conference. However, substitutions can be made until the day of the conference at no charge.
