Upon graduation, you will be eligible to sit for credentialing exams to achieve licensure as a Respiratory Technician or Respiratory Therapist and you will be qualified to work in: 

  • Hospitals
  • Physicians' offices
  • Skilled nursing facilities
  • Provide home care

As a respiratory therapist practicing under the care of a physician, you will evaluate and treat all types of patients, ranging from premature infants whose lungs are not fully developed to elderly people whose lungs are diseased, all made possible with skill and professionalism achieved at Molloy University.

  • What is a Respiratory Therapist?

    • As respiratory therapists we are actively engaged in the therapeutic and diagnostic treatment of people of all ages who have respiratory conditions.
    • Respiratory Therapy is considered one of the fastest growing health care areas. Employment opportunities are expected to increase by 14% between the years 2021-2031.
    • The salary for a respiratory therapist is highly competitive, the hours are flexible and the possibilities are endless. Many graduates are employed by our 14 clinical and hospital sites.

  • Program Requirements

    • All students are required to have a pre-entrance physical examination, annual physical examination and required immunizations on the College Health Form. Students must also meet specified health requirements of individual clinical agencies.
    • Students are required to have a background check and drug screening.
    • High School students are required to have courses in algebra, biology and chemistry.
    • Students may be required to interview with the Program Director.
    • All students accepted into the program are required to provide a Basic Life Support (CPR) certification and be able to perform CPR.
    • Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the clinical sites.
    • Transfer students must have a track record of proven academic success.

  • Accreditation

    The Bachelor of Science Degree Program in Respiratory Care at Molloy University is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care.

    COARC Program # 200369

    The Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care became a freestanding accreditor of respiratory care programs in November 2009. CoARC accredits respiratory therapy education programs in the United States. To achieve this end, it utilizes an 'outcomes based' process. Programmatic outcomes are performance indicators that reflect the extent to which the educational goals of the program are achieved and by which program effectiveness is documented.

    Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the written and clinical simulation examinations given by the National Board for Respiratory Care. Upon passing these exams, graduates earn the Certified
    Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials.

  • Credentialing/ Licensure

    Molloy’s  respiratory care, nuclear medicine and cardiovascular technology programs are approved by NY state and meet requirements for initial licensure or credentialing in New York state. Other state boards and state licensing authorities may have different initial licensure/credentialing requirements. 

    Students who reside in states other than New York, or who will seek employment outside of New York state should contact that  state’s licensing authority before enrolling, to confirm meeting eligibility requirements for an initial credential or  licensure in that state after completing our program.  Molloy University has not determined whether completion of the university’s respiratory care, nuclear medicine technology, or cardiovascular technology programs meet the educational requirements to apply for initial licensure or credentialing in states other than New York.
