The music education program at Molloy University provides a dynamic, engaging pathway toward a career in teaching music.

Our program embraces a progressive and humanistic approach that recognizes and develops students' strengths across a variety of musical traditions. Our students receive a rigorous foundation in formal classical training on their primary instrument or voice across several semesters, but they also nurture and develop a plurality of musical competencies during their years at Molloy. 21st century music education thrives on a diverse and innovative teaching force. Musicianship, educatorship, technology, and entrepreneurship comprise a core skill set for music educators to create opportunities to connect with all students, both inside and outside of preK-12 public school settings.   • Learning Outcomes

    • Demonstrate proficiency in performing on their primary instrument or voice in a variety of solo and ensemble settings.
    • Apply an extensive, functional skillset toward educational settings. This skillset includes proficiency in voice, keyboard, wind, brass, string, and percussion instruments; conducting, arranging, solo performance, and ensemble performance.
    • Be well-acquainted with musical literature and conventions from diverse cultures and periods, along with their respective sociocultural and historical contexts.
    • Demonstrate awareness of current issues, philosophies, scholarship, methods, materials, and practices in music education. Students evaluate, select, reject, adapt, and apply these to specific teaching situations as appropriate.
    • Apply evaluative techniques to assess students' educational needs. Students design developmentally and culturally appropriate lessons and programming to address these needs.

  • Student Teaching

    Music Education majors complete required field observation hours and student teaching assignments over the course of three semesters in public schools across Long Island and New York City. Each student is assigned to one elementary, one middle, and one high school to acquire valuable teaching experience with diverse student populations.

  • Career Outcomes for Molloy Music Education Students

    Our graduates are employed in Public Schools across the five boroughs. Many of them have pursued graduate degrees in Music or related fields. Some examples include:

    Brendan (BSME '16): Middle school classroom music, strings, Suffolk County.
    Meagan (BSME '15): Elementary school classroom, choral, and instrumental music, Bronx.
    Cristina (BSME '14): Elementary school band, Queens. Graduate ME student at NYU.
