ACCUPLACER FAQs
-
How does Molloy evaluate college readiness?
Since Molloy University is test optional, SAT/ACT scores or ACCUPLACER scores are used to determine incoming students’ math, reading and writing college readiness and math and English course placement.
Math college readiness is demonstrated by an ACCUPLACER score of at least 250 or:
- SAT score of at least 490 or ACT score of at least 19 (for all students except nursing)
- SAT score of at least 540 or ACT score of at least 22 (for nursing students)
For students without SAT or ACT scores, overall Math GPA will be used in combination with ACCUPLACER scores.
Reading college readiness is demonstrated for all students by an ACCUPLACER score of at least 250 or:
- SAT sub score of at least 26 or ACT sub score of at least 20 exempts students from reading courses
For students without SAT or ACT scores, overall English GPA will be used in combination with ACCUPLACER scores.
Writing college readiness is demonstrated for all students by an ACCUPLACER score of at least 250 or:
- SAT sub score of at least 26 or ACT sub score of at least 8 exempts students from writing courses
For students without SAT or ACT scores, overall English GPA will be used in combination with ACCUPLACER scores.

What is ACCUPLACER?
ACCUPLACER is a suite of tests that quickly, accurately, and efficiently assesses reading, writing, and math skills, and pinpoint students’ academic strengths and areas for growth so targeted study can be prescribed.
-
What are ACCUPLACER scores used for?
Since Molloy University is test optional, if an incoming student does not provide their SAT or ACT scores, ACCUPLACER will be used to evaluate college readiness. ACCUPLACER scores do not affect your admissions status to the programs you have already been accepted to or your honors program placements.
-
When will students receive their scores?
Students will receive their scores immediately after completion of the ACCUPLACER.
-
Do students with SAT/ACT scores that demonstrate college readiness need to take ACCUPLACER?
All students are required to take ACCUPLACER; however, scores are used for assessment purposes for students that demonstrate college readiness by their SAT/ACT scores or other admissions criteria. For students with SAT/ACT scores that do not meet the guidelines listed above or students without SAT/ACT scores, ACCUPLACER is used to evaluate college readiness and ensure proper placement.
-
What happens if an incoming student’s ACCUPLACER scores are below 250?
The ACCUPLACER retest policy allows a student who does not achieve a minimum score of 250 on the initial assessment, be given a chance to retest in two weeks (14 days), from their initial test date to demonstrate improvement. Before the retest date, students are advised to spend concentrated time studying on each test subject. Students are encouraged to review available practice materials and test descriptions found on the ACCUPLACER Website. If students retake the ACCUPLACER, their higher score will be used, and a small fee may apply.
