Paris is the birthplace of modernism in the early late 19th and early 20th century. Art, technology, science and business all grew by leaps and bounds during this era. Peugot was making its first cars and Edouard Michelin patented its first removable pneumatic tires. Paris was also a place for science in this time period with such great names as Louis Pasteur and Marie Curie. Montparnasse and Montmartre, two small sections of Paris, were havens for artists and intellectuals alike. Names like Picasso, Chagall, Rousseau and Brancusi ( to name a few) sought out each other to share their ideas and the ideas of others.
