From Soup to Nuts: Ensuring Comprehensive SLP Management for Patients with Head and Neck Cancer

The Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) Department and the Office of Continuing Education at Molloy University are pleased to offer our Fall 2023 CSD conference.  

The Fall 2023 conference will offer two options to attend: in-person and virtual through Zoom.

This intermediate level program will provide attendees up to 0.55 ASHA CEUs in the area of speech-language pathology. 

Description:This course will review HNC ABC's including disease staging, oncologic treatment modalities and their impacts on swallowing (and speech). It will review the major players in the multidisciplinary HNC team and the role of the SLP as a critical member of that team including the knowledge and skills required to work with HNC patients effectively. Dysphagia evaluation and treatment modalities and current practice standards will be discussed as well as case examples to solidify information for participants.

Speaker: Laurie Wennerholm, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-S she/her/hers Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders Clinical Specialist: Dysphagia NYU Langone Health Adjunct Instructor, NYU Steinhardt School of Education Doctoral Student, University of Queensland

Speaker Bio: Laurie J. Wennerholm is a clinical specialist in swallowing and swallowing disorders with 25 years devoted to medical speech pathology. Laurie completed her Master’s Degree at St. John’s University, and earned Specialty Certification in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders in 2006--maintaining her specialty recognition through leadership and scholarship. Laurie also serves as an adjunct professor at New York University and she teaches the Dysphagia graduate course at this institution. She has mentored and supervised many students completing clinical internships as well as clinical fellows. 

Currently, she is employed at NYU Langone Health. Her focus is in evaluation and treatment of speech-voice and swallowing impairments in patients with head and neck cancers and general program building within the department of speech-language pathology. 

She is enrolled in a PhD program where her research focus aims to improve the care pathway for patients with laryngectomy. Her goal is to continue her clinical work and eventually conduct relevant research to optimize care and quality of life for individuals with head and neck cancer.

The program will take place on Friday, October 27, 2023 with the breakfast, check-in and registration being held from 8:00-9:00 a.m., and the program will begin at 9:00 a.m.

In-Person and Zoom Options
Participants may choose to attend either in-person or remotely through Zoom. There is a separate registration depending upon the format you choose. Please also note that the Zoom option will have a lower rate of tuition than the in-person option because food will not be offered. The Zoom link will be sent shortly before the conference date. You must attend in real-time to receive CE credit. The program will not be recorded.

ASHA CEUs
This intermediate level program will provide attendees the opportunity to achieve up to .55 ASHA CEU's in the area of speech-language pathology. You must attend in real-time to receive CE credit. The program will not be recorded.

Molloy's Communication Sciences and Disorders Department continues to offer a comprehensive undergraduate program in Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology and also offers an M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology. The M.S. program in speech-language pathology at Molloy College is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Additionally, our Speech, Language and Hearing Center is located off campus in a new facility and continues to serve the community by providing an array of evaluation and treatment services.
