EDU 5290
Identifying and Assessing Gifted Students The course will provide an introduction to the field of gifted education and enable teacher candidates to understand and apply identification and assessment processes of gifted children PK-12. The goal of this course is for teacher candidates to be able to identify and understand the cognitive characteristics and academic, social, and emotional needs of gifted children in order to create more effective learning environments for them. Diagnostic, formative and summative assessment methods will be presented.   Specific tools and strategies for assessing gifted students in each content area will be shared.

Designing Curriculum and Instruction for Gifted Students The course is designed to provide teacher candidates with frameworks and models for designing curriculum that is developmentally appropriate for gifted students PK-12. It will enable participants to define instructional objectives, developmental procedures, and assessment tools and align all three elements to develop curriculum that is appropriate for gifted students PK-12. The implementation of current research-based instructional methods that include strategies and techniques tailored to the individual needs of gifted students will be shared. Inquiry models, project-based and problem-based learning, and creative instructional approaches will be shared. Technology and assessment techniques will be addressed.

 Differentiating Instruction for Diverse Learners The course will prepare teacher candidates to tailor their instruction to the individual needs of their diverse populations, which include PK-12 gifted students and twice exceptional students. They will learn how to adapt their content-area instruction to advance the learning of their diverse students but also differentiate their teaching according to content, process, product to benefit all students. The goal is for teacher candidates to understand and apply different methodologies, strategies, and techniques to support the learning of every child in the classroom. Models of coteaching and collaboration with support staff will be addressed. Effective technology and assessment tools will be presented.

Collaboration and Leadership in Gifted Education The course will provide an overview of the field of gifted education, its historical context and theoretical and research basis, and address standards, policies and implementation of programs related to servicing the needs of gifted students PK-12. The goal is for teacher candidates to become familiar with various programs in gifted education and learn how to advocate for and address the needs of students who may learn differently than their classmates and whose interests and talents need to be appreciated and nurtured. Teacher candidates will learn different models and methods of collaboration between and among teachers, students, colleagues, administrators, and parents that support the cognitive and socio-emotional development of gifted students.
