Statement on Academic Integrity

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY exists in an environment where students are committed to honesty and truth in scholarship and research. Based on the Dominican tradition of VERITAS (truth) and one of its pillars STUDY, academic integrity is striving to do one's best work in a way that does not cheat, demean, or manipulate others. This may be defined as changing facts, presenting others' ideas as your own, misleading a professor, poor work, and other means. At Molloy, SUCCESS is expressed by commitment to academic excellence with respect for each person.

Instructors may contact Marion Flomenhaft, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Academic Services with any student or grading concern; in Kellenberg Hall, Room 119, 516.323.3024 or email Marion Flomenhaft.

The faculty and student concerned should discuss the breach of academic dishonesty. Faculty members are encouraged to refer students for discipline by providing an official written charge against the student below.

Instructors are notified of meetings between the dean and student; and of their discipline and progress.  Contact Marion Flomenhaft with any questions about the process.  To report a student to the Associate Dean for Academic Services regarding a possible academic infraction, submit:

  1. Complete the Complaint Form, including detailed information about a possible integrity violation. Specify the type of infraction: plagiarism, cheating on an exam or quiz, falsification, fabrication, forgery, or any another form of academic misconduct.
  2. A copy of the relevant exam or assignment.
  3. For cases of plagiarism, the Turnitin results or a copy of the source with the plagiarized section highlighted. Clearly mark the two documents so the plagiarism is easily identifiable.
  4. If cheating is suspected, it is important to keep good notes of the situation including any possible witnesses.  For online classes, submit the Respondus indicators and the incidences of unusual behaviors.  Note how the situation was handled in the moment or after the exam and any follow-up interactions you had with the student.
  5. The course outline.
  6. Any other pertinent evidence.

NOTE: If a student has lodged a complaint against you as professor, it is very important avoid the appearance of retaliation, as defined by the EEOC; that makes it illegal to give a poor grade, harass, or otherwise "retaliate" against people because they filed a charge of discrimination, because they complained to the associate dean, division dean, department chairperson, or other reporting entity at the college about discrimination in the classroom, or because they participated in a discrimination proceeding.
