Molloy University to honor S. Mary Pat Neylon at Commencement
Molloy University announced today that it will bestow an honorary degree on the Prioress of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville at the College's 2016 commencement ceremony slated for Saturday, May 21 at 11 a.m., Nikon at Jones Beach Theatre.
Molloy will award an honorary Doctor of Laws degree (LL.D.) to S. Mary Pat Neylon during the commencement exercises. S. Mary Pat entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville in September 1961. She taught at a number of elementary and high schools until 1985, when she began her service at Molloy.
For approximately 28 years, S. Mary Pat continued teaching and serving the College in a variety of roles, including Founding Director of the Faculty Professional Center. She has earned many honors at Molloy, including the President's Distinguished Service Medal. In 2013 she was elected Prioress of the Amityville Dominicans.
"In a year when the Dominican Order of Preachers celebrates its 800 anniversary, it is only fitting that we honor someone who truly embodies the Dominican spirit," said Dr. Drew Bogner, President of Molloy. "Sister Mary Pat's life of serving and leading others makes her the perfect role model for our graduating students."
Dr. Bogner will give the commencement speech at this year's graduation event. He came to Molloy in July of 2000, after serving as Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Newman University in Wichita, Kansas. Under Dr. Bogner's leadership, Molloy has reframed itself from a predominantly Baccalaureate undergraduate institution into a comprehensive, graduate-granting institution, adding more than 25 new Master's programs and the College's first three doctoral programs.
