Bryan Rosado ('18, M.B.A. '19) Interns at Universal Music Group

Last summer, senior Bryan Rosado interned for Universal Music Group in the marketing department for Cash Money Records and Republic Records.

We sat down with Bryan and discussed how Molloy has helped him pursue his dream career path.

How did you know you wanted to pursue a career in music production?

I've known I wanted to do this for a long time. When we moved from Queens to Valley Stream in the middle of seventh grade, my mom encouraged me to get involved with my new church. I noticed that the church had a soundboard, and I asked the creative ministries person if he could teach me how to use the equipment. He showed me how to work with different audio equipment and then I had acquired skills within music production. I volunteered both at church and at my high school, eventually becoming the lead to run events such as pep rallies, shows, performance, and more. I came into college certain that I wanted to end up working in the music industry.

Why did you choose to be a Business major at Molloy University?

Ironically, when Molloy came to my high school for an on-site visit, I was away on a school trip. Nevertheless, I decided to apply to the Business program and Dean Stephen Bier contacted me for an interview. When I arrived on campus to meet with him, I had a feeling that this was going to be the right place for me. I knew I wanted to stay close to home. I was also interested in the program's five-year M.B.A. degree.

Tell me a little bit about your role as an intern at Universal Music Group.

I interned under the vice president of marketing for Cash Money and Republic Records. It was a very hands-on internship. On Thursdays I would sit in what they called Urban Collective meetings. I would take notes and help the assistant create the weekly agendas.

At the end of the summer, I had the opportunity to present to the VP of Marketing. I was able to share my thoughts on the website, recommend some up-and-coming unsigned artists, and share my own feedback of the internship itself.

How was the internship experience overall?

It was amazing to work with a group of people who are so passionate about the music industry. I had the chance to view artists signing with the label and even met some artists. After meeting these artists I was inspired to keep pursuing my passion within the music industry. 

The internship program at Universal Music Group is really well done. We would have "Intern Fridays." Every week, someone in the building with a leadership role would talk to us about their background and experience within the industry. They would also share their own personal insight on what the interns should do for their future and how to make themselves look more qualified for future positions within any organization.

How has your involvement with MolloyLife, our student-run media organization, helped you grow as a professional?

This year, I am Co-Editor-in-Chief of MolloyLife Media, which has been an amazing experience. I began getting involved as a sophomore. One of my friends who was a graphic design editor there at the time suggested that should join the club. Last year, I was a social media editor which meant I helped with posting on all of MolloyLife's platforms.

In addition to honing my leadership skills, I am still doing a lot of hands-on work. As a team, we learn from each other every day. I would highly recommend that any students who are interested in media join. Being a part of this group has been rewarding and has opened up doors for the team as a whole.

Which professors have made the most impact on you?

Professor Dawn DiStefano is one of the professors that had an impact on me. I had her for my capstone and digital media marketing class. I felt like I connected with her and I appreciated that she brought her corporate experience into the mix.

Another professor would be New Media professor Jamie Cohen. I took his core class and Introduction to New Media this semester. Every day I am constantly learning something in his class.

I appreciate the media and cultural knowledge that he brings to the class. I feel like highly interactive classes like his have helped me become a better student.

What's next for you?

This May, I will complete my undergraduate studies; however, I still have another year at Molloy because I am doing the five-year M.B.A. program. I hope to continue pursuing my career within media.
