Honoring All Who Served

By Barbara Novack Writer-in-Residence, Molloy College

Veterans

They come home
Silent
Trying to be
Who they should be
For a world
That has no idea
Where they've been
What they've seen
Because
They were there
And we weren't.

Some seem to adjust
Just fine
Hug their babies
Go back to school
Hold onto their jobs
Rise in the world
You'll never know

Whether the screams
They hear
Are real or not,

Theirs or
Someone else's,
A person
They remember
That they'll never
Tell you about
Because
They were there
And you weren't.

They were there
In trenches
In foxholes
In jungles
In deserts
And they come home
To us,
And we
Should never be
Silent
For them.
