The Power of Internships
Mary Gallagher '18
Recent graduate Mary Gallagher comes from a large family of Molloy graduates and current students. She knew Molloy was the school for her as she wanted to be close to home. As a student, she studied English at Molloy and worked part time at McDonald's, but wasn't sure what she wanted to do with her degree. She thought she would write novels until an internship at Irish America changed her career trajectory.
Irish America is a bi-monthly magazine that has a circulation of over 100,000 in the US, Ireland and Canada. It is a colorful magazine that speaks about people and things associated with the Irish culture and the impact of the Irish on the United States. She received an internship with the magazine in February 2018 through Molloy and Cathy Muscente, Vice President of Mission and Ministry's network. She was able to write articles and get first-hand experience in the journalism field. Due to her great work, upon graduation, she was hired as an assistant editor. Not only does she still write, but now she edits works as well.
Mary is grateful for the opportunity for the internship and feels that she would not be where she is nor have a job without Molloy's support. She thinks she would still be working at McDonald's. Mary looks forward to growing her roles and responsibilities at the magazine and is enjoying all the experiences she is getting.
