Summer Writing Experience 2015 at Molloy a Success
A $500 scholarship to Molloy was presented to
For two weeks in July, a group of motivated high school juniors, seniors, and college freshmen attended the Summer Writing Experience. The Monday through Thursday program, hosted by Molloy Writing Center's professional consultants, consisted of a variety of workshops in topics ranging from college writing and personal essay writing to poetry, fiction writing, and sentence composition. The program introduced students to the many facets of academic and professional writing and gave them the opportunity to be a part of Molloy's dynamic community.
Aside from daily workshops, study hours in the library, and lively lunches in the Anselma Room (where the quesadillas were a favorite), attendees visited various departments on campus. Department representatives spoke to the group about the relevance of writing in the fields of business, music therapy, social work, speech-language pathology, and criminal justice. Students were also exposed to the possibilities of Molloy's Media Center when Professor Matt Applegate presented an engaging workshop on digital writing. Rounding out the curriculum, visiting speaker Anna Cairney talked about various aspects of editing and publishing from her experiences working for the literary agency Writers House in Manhattan.
On the final day, attendees could be seen zigzagging across campus in search of clues for the treasure hunt as they used their new knowledge about writing and Molloy to compete for prizes. The program concluded with a closing ceremony where students were given the opportunity to read their original works in front of family, friends, and members of the Molloy community. A Certificate of Completion was awarded to each student, and a $500 scholarship to Molloy was presented to participant Briana Atkins of Malverne High School. The second annual Summer Writing Experience was clearly a success, and the word is out that next year's program promises to be just as challenging and just as much fun!
