Molloy College mourns passing of Sister Janet Fitzgerald, O.P., Ph.D., the 4th President of Molloy College

It is with sadness that I inform you that Sister Janet Fitzgerald, President Emerita, passed away on Sunday, December 1.

Sr. Janet Fitzgerald giving her inaugural address, February 10, 1973.Sister Janet Fitzgerald, O.P., Ph.D., came to Molloy in 1969 as a philosophy professor and was elected president in the fall of 1972.  Sister Janet took on the role of leadership at a time of growth in both the student population and the physical campus. Ten years into her term, in 1982, Molloy officially became co-educational.  During her 24 years as president, Molloy College's student population doubled and academic programs expanded, adding over 13 major fields of study and introducing both graduate programs and post-master's certificate programs. The physical campus also expanded during that time, adding three new buildings: the Wilbur Arts Center, the Sacred Heart Chapel, and the William J. Casey Center.  Click here to read Sister Janet's Inauguration program from February 10, 1973.

"Molloy College has grown dramatically since my arrival in 1969; yet it is still 'in essence' the same:  a college whose students, alumni, faculty, staff, and administration are unified by a Dominican 'charism' that is quite evident - the personal worth and dignity of the human person.  It is this Molloy charism that unites us in our diversity, embraces and welcomes change, and fortifies us as we, together, face the future with confidence."  (Sister Janet Fitzgerald, O.P., Fourth President of Molloy College - quote taken from the Molloy College 50th Anniversary Commemoration Book)
