Partner Project : A private violence
By Claire Baumann
Over 560 people filled the Madison Theatre on January 29 for the Partner Project's Second Annual Conference. This event featured a free screening of the film Private Violence, an HBO documentary produced and directed by Cynthia Hill. The intimate film reveals the stories of two women Deanna Walters, who changes from victim to survivor, and Kit Gruelle, an advocate for justice on domestic violence. After the film was shown, a panel discussion took place with Mary Lane, M.S., RN of the Division of Nursing at Molloy College.
Mr. John Amodeo, co-founder of the Partner Project, is extremely dedicated to this cause. "The support The Partner Project® has received since it began in October 2013 truly humbles my colleagues and I. Men and women of all ages and lifestyles have joined with us in the fight against relationship violence. It is this support that has allowed us to reach far beyond Molloy's campus providing a forum for individuals to speak out against this abusive behavior" says Amodeo. He continues, "What gives us the greatest satisfaction is [the knowledge] that we have touched the lives of countless individuals by creating an organization that cares for them in a way that allows them to keep their dignity and doesn't question the choices they've made. Most importantly, we are proud to be part of an organization that can help to transform their lives".
The Partner Project will be hosting its fourth event on campus which is scheduled for April 22. At this upcoming event Jillian Loyden, former goalie of the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team, will be speaking in the Madison Theatre. Ms. Loyden is the founder of The Jillian Loyden Foundation after her sister, a victim of relationship violence, was killed.
Congratulations to Dr. Teresa Aprigliano, Associate Dean of Nursing and Mr. John Amodeo, M.A. the co-founders of the Partner Project for a successful event and for not only raising awareness on such an important issue, but creating a safe haven for the Molloy College community and beyond.
