New Dean of The Barbara H. Hagan School of Nursing to Start in 2018
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Marcia R. Gardner, Ph.D., RN, CPNP, CPN has accepted our offer to become the next Dean of The Barbara H. Hagan School of Nursing. Dr. Gardner comes to this position with 37 years of experience in Nursing and Nursing Education, most recently serving as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs and Assessment at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. Dr. Gardner has experience spanning all levels of nursing education, in many different schools and colleges, both on ground and on line, at various levels of instructional and administrative appointment. In addition to success in bringing significant external funding to her programs, she has deep experience in curriculum and assessment, and brings a dimension of experience in inter-disciplinary program development, CCNE and Middle States Accreditation that dovetail well with operational and strategic goals of the School of Nursing and Molloy College. Taken together, her credentials and experience present a picture of a skilled and talented academic leader.
Dr. Gardner, a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, has served in staff and consultant roles in Newborn Intensive Care Units in three states. She has received numerous honors and awards for her work in clinical practice and nursing education. She has served as Principle Investigator on federal grants, has numerous publications in refereed journals, has presented both nationally and internationally, and currently serves as an editor and reviewer for national and international nursing journals. Most recently, Dr. Gardner's scholarly work has concentrated on nursing care of populations with intellectual and developmental disabilities and she has published articles and books as well as presented on topics associated with Asperger's Spectrum Disorder and Autism.
In person, Dr. Gardner presents an aura of energy and enthusiasm for her profession, for its practitioners as well as its clients. She is person-centered, deeply knowledgeable, intelligent and respectful of all elements of the human experience. The feedback from the Search Committee, campus feedback and references were consistent in their praise for her personal qualities, the depth and relevance of her experience, and a sense of authenticity in her approach to leadership and the potential it could bring to Molloy College.
Although her position as Dean officially starts on January 1, 2018, Marcia will be spending some time communicating with Dean Muldoon and the Associate Deans during the transition period this fall. We look forward to officially welcoming her at the start of the spring semester.
I would like to thank Dr. Barbara Schmidt and the members of the Search Committee for doing a superb job of bringing forward four excellent and qualified finalists. The candidates all expressed their appreciation for the quality of their interactions with the Committee, and for the value they added to the search process. I am grateful to them and to the members of staff and faculty of The Barbara H. Hagan School of Nursing for their patience and fortitude during this long process.
