Molloy Adjunct Professor of Economics Meets with Portuguese President and Prime Minister

Gabriel Marques, Molloy Adjunct Professor of Economics recently met with the President and Prime Minister of Portugal as part of a government program aimed at recognizing Portuguese Diaspora throughout the world. In September, Gabriel was selected to represent the over 200,000 Portuguese-American's living in CT, DE, NJ, NY, PA, MI and the Caribbean on the Portuguese Government's pro-bono Gabriel Marques, Molloy Adjunct Professor of Economics diaspora advisory council, which officially met in Lisbon this April. Marques, along with colleague Isabelle Marques from Westchester (no relation), were received by both the President of Portugal, Prof. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa at his residence in the Palace of Belem and the Prime Minister, Antonio Costa, at his residence in the Palace of Sao Bento, presenting each with a pewter sculpture of the New York City skyline. Gabriel is the first person from New York State to he named to the council and was even named President of the Regional Advisory Council for Portuguese Diaspora of North America for his success in uniting the Portuguese community in the Empire State.

Both the President and Prime Minister recognized the accomplishment of Mineola's annual Portugal Day Parade in reviving the community, highlighting the growing importance of the New York as an economic hub for Portugal and marking the return of the Portuguese national airline (TAP) to JFK this summer. President Sousa also confirmed that he will be traveling to New York this September to meet with the community and to help celebrate the 225th anniversary of the Consulate in Manhattan, one of the oldest the United States has with a foreign nation.
