Eileen McDonnell has dominated in male-dominated fields for her entire career. The 52-year-old CEO of Penn Mutual says her gender has never held her back in her career. "I'm a firm believer that if any person empowers themselves - women in particular - you take control of your own destiny," says McDonnell today.
McDonnell grew up in a family of five girls and one boy, headed by an educator father and stay-at-home mom. "My parents told me I could be anything I wanted to be - and I actually believed them," she says.
After earning degrees in mathematics and science, she launched her career with Wang Industries. The tech industry - as it is today - was dominated by men. She was quickly promoted to a management position, then moved to Equitable Life Insurance (now AXA Equitable) where she was named vice president at age 27. From there McDonnell held executive positions at the Guardian Life Insurance Company of America and New England Financial.
