In Memoriam - Michael A. McGovern
Michael McGovern was very instrumental in bringing the College to a solid financial footing. He was also very successful in the planning and redesign of the College campus from the Campus Facilities Master Plan that was developed a dozen years ago to the two phases of building that have taken place.
In recognition of his tireless efforts, the Board has decided to recognize Michael by naming the residential quad, the "Michael A. McGovern Residential Plaza." Thankfully, I was able to personally communicate this recognition to Michael and his family several weeks ago. He was very appreciative and touched. We will formally recognize this naming, posthumously, at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the third residence hall later this year.
Dr. Drew Bogner, President
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Michael A. McGovern.
Michael A. McGovern served as Molloy College's Vice President for Finance and Treasurer since his hiring in late 2001 and worked in this role until he announced his retirement this past summer. For the past several months, Michael served in a transitional and advisory role to the President. Prior to coming to Molloy, Michael worked as the Deputy Executive Director of Finance and Support Services at the New York Foundling Hospital for 23 years. Michael was a committed and conscientious leader who played an integral role in supporting and promoting the growth of the College and its mission. His leadership led to the sound financial position of the College, which greatly contributed to the success of two Standard and Poor's bond ratings and the overall transformation of the College.
During his tenure, Michael was responsible for the oversight of the following College offices; Administrative Services and Purchasing, Compliance, Facilities, Finance, Human Resources, Public Safety and Special Events. Michael was also active with the College's Board of Trustees and served as the Secretary of the Fiscal Affairs and Audit Committee, the Secretary of the Facilities Committee and the Secretary of the Investment Advisory Sub-Committee. Internally, Michael served on numerous College task forces and committees and chaired the Financial Resources Committee.
In his 17 years at Molloy, Michael played an instrumental role in developing and implementing both the College's Facilities and Investment Master Plans. Under his leadership, the College financed and constructed the following campus facilities; Siena Hall, the maintenance facility, the Public Square, Fitzgerald Hall, Maria Regina Hall and the Barbara H. Hagan Center. Additionally, during his tenure, the College forged partnerships and renovated facilities off the Rockville Centre campus including numerous athletic facilities, the CERCOM facility in West Sayville, 30 Hempstead Avenue and both the Manhattan and Suffolk Centers. The scope of these projects was vast and included a unique skill set including attention to detail, financial knowledge and the ability to interact with architects, attorneys, town and village boards, contractors as well as the Board of Trustees. Michael used his many personal virtues to successfully see these projects to completion. His ability to lead and persevere in the service of our larger community is something we celebrate today.
On a personal note, Michael was married to his wife Kathy for 44 years and was the very proud father to daughter Gillian. Gillian and her husband, Joe, gave Michael three of his greatest gifts, grandchildren; Joseph, Ryan and Avery. Michael was an avid music fan, golfer and had a great love of travel. He and Kathy shared many wonderful vacations, including several cross Atlantic trips to his early home in England. Additionally, Michael was an enthusiastic sports fan and a strong supporter of Molloy's athletic teams and was often found in the stands at both the men's and women's basketball games cheering on the Molloy Lions.
Michael will be missed by his many colleagues and friends. Please keep Michael and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
