Christmas Peace and Good Will to All
by Barbara Novack, Molloy College's Writer-in-Residence
Is it the tree, colored balls reflecting,
Is it the sugar-cookie, hot cider aroma
wafting through the rooms?
Is it the music, songs of chestnuts roasting,
jingling bells, and, especially, that holy night?
Is it the eight days of miracle,
a candle for each,
and the eight little gifts marking
the gift of consecrated oil lasting?
Is it the oil crackling in the frying pan,
Is it the spinning dreidel?
It is the return each year
of days of light in the darkest season,
days of hope in the weariest time.
It is the pause each year
to gather and celebrate
and in gathering remember
all the holidays past
when the trees were also bright
and the candles also glowed
when the smells were delicious
and the sounds sublime.
It is now
as it ever was
filled with love.
Light our pathway in this holy season, so we may bring the message of truth to those we serve!
