Celebrating Independence Day

Enjoy the day and its fun, but especially enjoy the fireworks that will, as John Adams wished, light up the night sky in celebration of what was achieved in Philadelphia in 1776, when 56 men mutually pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honors to state what we are.

       We Are . . .
by Barbara Novack, Molloy's Writer-in-Residence

On a stormy afternoon in Philadelphia 242 years ago, a nation was born and shed light

We are
red for sacrifice
white for the blank page of the future we've always looked to
blue for the eastern ocean and the western one
and the 3000 miles of sky that stretches between
and above the northernmost Alaskan tip of us
and the lush Hawaiian Islands of us

We are
heroes and heritage
from everywhere

We are
linked beings
looking up at a night sky filled
with bursting light
remembering
that fever dream of Philadelphia
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal . . .
endowed by their Creator . . .
Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness . . .

We are
a hope of that perfection

"Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions and the spirit of men
and so it must be daily earned and refreshed
else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots,
it will wither and die."
--Dwight D. Eisenhower
