Student-athletes at Molloy shine on and off the field
By Jack A. Zolla, Director of Athletic Communications
For the 2013-14 athletic year, academics were once again stellar for the Lions' student-athletes. During the spring semester, a new academic all-time feat was achieved as each of the 19 varsity and club teams at Molloy posted a 3.0 team GPA or better for the first time. The Department of Athletics boasted a 3.32 overall GPA with 56 percent of the student-athletes being placed on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (a student-athlete qualifies for the ADHR by achieving a 3.25 or higher GPA). A program-best was set with 24 student-athletes achieving a pristine, perfect and unblemished 4.0 semester GPA. These 24 student-athletes will be added to the Lions' Athletics 4.0 GPA Club and will be honored during an on-field ceremony in the fall.
During the Fall 2013 semester, the Department of Athletics posted a 3.25 GPA for all sports with 55 percent of the student-athlete population qualifying for the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. Twelve student-athletes achieved the honor of a perfect 4.0 semester GPA. They were inducted into the Lions' Athletics 4.0 GPA Club in a special on-court ceremony on January 30 during halftime of the Molloy women's basketball game versus the University of Bridgeport. The Fall 2013 4.0 GPA Club class was the third installment of the prestigious distinction and those student-athletes' names were added to a banner on display in Quealy Gymnasium.
Other individual academic laurels included senior Nicolette Sinagra being named the East Coast Conference's Co-Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as well as the Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In addition, junior Stephanie Meyer was lauded as the ECC Women's Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
