Assistant/Associate Professor for Sociology
The Position and Duties
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Molloy College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Sociology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin on September 1st, 2020. The Department offers a bachelor's degree in Sociology and a minor in Anthropology, and is broadly interdisciplinary in nature. It is one of nearly two dozen academic departments reconfigured within a new School of Arts and Sciences at Molloy College. As the College seeks to continue to add value as one of the most affordable private institutions in the region, the founding of the new School of Arts and Sciences plays a major role in its future strategic goals. In line with Molloy College's Strategic Plan, the new School of Arts and Sciences seeks to address a number of its themes, from responsive education to student success to organizational effectiveness.
The successful candidate will teach both intro and upper level courses, and contribute to the department's required core offerings such as Introduction to Sociology, Social Theory, Social Problems, Criminology, Deviance, and Juvenile Delinquency. The successful candidate will also be expected to develop new courses in emerging and innovative areas in alignment with other departments, programs and initiatives at the College. Particular areas of interest to the Department and the School of Arts and Sciences are demography and population studies, political sociology, and urban sociology. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with colleagues across the School in the Joan Reddy Merlo Community Research Institute on building a survey research program for students and faculty.
The primary professional responsibilities of Molloy's faculty are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the College, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in department, school, and campus-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions. The successful candidate will also be committed to the academic success of all of our students and to an environment that encourages and celebrates diversity and differences. The successful candidate will work effectively, respectfully, and collaboratively in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings
• Ph.D. in Sociology. Related fields will be considered under very limited circumstances. Consideration will be given to an advanced doctoral candidate for the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate for the rank of Associate Professor will have received tenure and promotion at another college or university.
• Demonstrated potential of research as well as a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching are expected.
• An ability to involve and mentor students in research and/or to provide them with experiential learning opportunities.
• Demonstrated potential to receive grant funding for research and programmatic activity.
• Ability to work in a cross-disciplinary fashion to develop innovative curricular programming.
Salary: Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
