"My service learning trip to New Orleans was a life-changing experience. I was horrified to see the devastation that still exists from Hurricane Katrina, yet touched by how very thankful the people were for the smallest things.
"I went there on an 'alternative Spring Break' trip run by Molloy. During the 10 days I was there as part of my Service Learning course, I earned college credit working at the city's Rebuild Center where the people of New Orleans go to eat, take a shower, get their mail and do their laundry. Other Molloy students were also there, working to help rebuild houses in the lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, which suffered the greatest devastation during the hurricane. These people have lost everything and still have nothing. I couldn't believe how bad off the residents still were, almost five years later. I plan on going down there to help again this year.
"Through Service Learning, I also completed a junior field placement with the Nassau County Department of Health & Human Services helping people fill out paperwork, and I've also participated in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. These experiences have given me a better understanding of the challenges in our communities, how public policy works and how I can help make a difference as a social worker.
"Next year, I plan to begin the Social Work Master's program Molloy offers with Fordham."
