Fire safety

Molloy College is committed to maintaining a comprehensive fire safety program for all members of the Molloy community. In order for the fire safety programs to be effective we must receive community wide support. This means that we expect cooperation from all community members during fire drills, announced and unannounced. Your understanding and adherence to the fire and safety rules of Molloy College is also expected.

How to keep yourself safe

  • Call Public Safety and give the fire location and description of the fire
  • Notify people in the area
  • Close the door behind you
  • Pull the fire alarm box
  • Evacuate the building
  • Meet at the assembly area
  • Always remain calm

Fire alarms

  • Evacuate immediately upon hearing the fire alarm
  • Never ignore fire alarms
  • Don't wait to see or smell smoke
  • Do not stop to collect your belongings
  • Follow instructions from public safety, residence life staff and emergency responders

How to survive a fire

  • If the door or handle is hot, don't open the door
  • Feel the door and handle, if it's not hot, open slowly
  • Check for smoke or fire before exiting the room
  • Close the door behind you
  • Pull the fire alarm box on your way out
  • Get out the building before phoning for help
  • Stay low to the floor
  • Meet at the assembly area
  • Follow instructions from public safety, residence life staff and emergency responders
  • Go to the window and attract someone's attention, by yelling or waving something
  • Call for help, hang a sheet from window
  • Wait for help, don't panic or jump

Plan escape routes

  • Know all exits in the building
  • Always have two means of egress
  • Know the location of the fire alarm boxes and fire extinguishers
  • Remain calm
  • Stay low to the ground

If your clothes catch fire

  • Stop, drop and roll
  • Keep your face covered
  • Get immediate attention

Fire prevention

  • Never tamper with fire safety equipment
  • No open flames
  • Report worn or damaged cords
  • No smoking in buildings
  • Participate in fire drills
