February 9, 2007: “The Faces of Caring: Nurses at Work"
The Molloy College Art Gallery will present a photography exhibition entitled, “The Faces of Caring: Nurses at Work”, from March 4 through April 4, 2007. This exhibit highlights photographs chosen by an expert panel of photographers and nurses in media which was sponsored by the American Journal of Nursing (AJN), Johnson’s and Johnson’s Campaign for Nursing’s Future and the Molloy College Department of Nursing. According to Diana Mason a judge on the advisory panel, “the stated goal of the exhibit is to communicate to a largely uninformed audience the important work of nursing as a profession.”
This exhibit is diverse and shows not only many different races and genders but patients in joy and pain and through hope and despair. Most of the photographs are from United States hospitals, but we also see Thai nurses helping Tsunami victims, a Guinean nurse about to vaccinate local children for measles and a Bengali nurse in a cancer hospital.
“Facing of Caring” is a serious effort to increase understanding of the importance and diversity of nursing. At the same time, it offers some gripping, thought-provoking looks at the front lines of modern heath care.

Sunday, April 9, 2006: Stuck: Art Critic Helen Harrison
In the history of collage, Rauschenberg stands midway between the early 20th-century Cubists and the contemporary artists in this group show, which looks at the technique from a wide variety of viewpoints.
Indeed, it defines collage very loosely encompassing, everything from pasted paper and cloth to found-object assemblage, defaced photographs and shredded magazines. Forget the literal meaning of collage; in the 21st century, it seems, glue is optional.
Joel Gertler takes a conventional approach, using magazine cutouts to fashion fantastic characters in surreal settings. In a similar way, Edward J. Majewski reconfigures newspaper clippings into structurally complex amalgams of words and pictures in which fragments of information vie for attention.
Pieces of fabric and paper form the underpinnings of paintings by Mike Piergrossi and Suzanne Dell'Orto, who organized the show. In Ms. Dell'Orto's "Patterning," bits of printed sewing patterns peek out from beneath translucent layers of paint, while Mr. Piergrossi chops up his own clothing and embeds it in the painted surface, figuratively inserting himself into the picture.
Curt Ikens dispenses with adhesive altogether. His torn version of "Art Through the Ages" is a witty deconstruction of Gardner's classic art-history textbook, turning its neatly classified chronology into a free-for-all jumble of periods and style.
February 28, 2006: STUCK The Influence of Collage on 21st Century Artists
The Molloy College Art Gallery will exhibit the works of twelve contemporary artists that use collage prominently in their work. Artists include Susan Austad, Suzanne Dell'Orto, Megan Gertler, Joel Gertler, Don Hazlitt, Lori Kent, Curt Ikens, Edward J. Majewski, Marla McLean, Mike Piergrossi, Kerry Stevens and Brigid Watson. The exhibition is curated by artist, Suzanne Dell'Orto with catalogue essays by Whitney program participant and art historian, Tina Gregory, Suzanne Dell'Orto and Molloy College Art Gallery Director, Dr.Yolande Trincere. The exhibition will include over twenty-five works and will be shown from March 25 through April 25, 2006. There will be a reception for the artists on Saturday March 25 from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.
The issue of collage in contemporary art is an important one, according to Dr. Yolande Trincere: "Contemporary artists see collage as a historical technique that was used throughout the 20th century to define many art movements from Synthetic Cubism to Pop. These new artists use the tactile elements of collage to express a very different schemata from their 20th century counterparts." Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 p.m. - 6 p.m. Please see our Website for additional information and directions to the college. For additional information and a press packet, contact Dr.Yolande Trincere or Cristina Pugliese at 516.678.5000 at ext. 6549.
