Molloy College Softball Clinches the No. 3 seed

On Monday, May 7, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic AssociationNational Collegiate Athletic Association released the 64-team field for its 2013 Division II Softball Championship, and Molloy College clinched the No. 3 seed in the East Region. The Lions will square off with sixth-seeded Dowling College in a first-round clash Friday at noon, and earned sub-regional hosting duties as well.

Molloy and Dowling have met six times this season, with the Lions owning a 5-1 record. Last week, the two squads faced each other on a pair of occasions at the East Coast Conference Tournament. The maroon and white won both games by the scores of 11-0 and 10-1. As for the Golden Lions, they picked up their lone victory in the series back on Mar. 30 (5-3 in 10 innings).

Since 2010, Molloy and Dowling have played 16 times in the regular season, eight times in the ECC Tournament, and twice in the NCAA Tournament. Over that stretch, the Lions own a mark of 16-10 against the Golden Lions.

The other sub-regional tilt features second-seeded Caldwell College and seventh-seeded Southern Connecticut State University. In the regular season, the two teams knocked heads back on Apr. 3 in Caldwell, N.J., with the Cougars taking both contests by the finals of 4-1 and 6-0.

The victor of the East II Sub-Regional will take on the winner of the East I Sub-Regional next week in the NCAA Division II East Super Regional at the highest remaining seed. In the end, one squad will represent the East at the NCAA Division II National Championships (May. 23-27) in Salem, Va.
