Lance Mason - Business Major

Lance Mason
"Molloy gave me the opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone. They encouraged me to determine my career path and pursue my true passion."

Molloy business honors student Lance Mason published his first book, Solving the Candle Problem, during his sophomore year. Based on the famous psychology experiment of the same name, the book explores the true meaning of success.

"I've always been interested in why someone chooses to pursue one career path over another," Lance explains. "For me, it has to be more than about just making money; it's about pursuing your passion. Now an accounting major, Lance initially came to Molloy intent on pursuing a career related to music.

"Many people assume that I switched my major to business - and now accounting - for financial reasons but that simply isn't the case. I have a real love for business. I am consumed by it." Lance found his passion for business, he says, during two summer internships arranged through Molloy: the first at UBS Financial Services the summer of freshman year; the second in Citifield ticket operations after sophomore year. It was during that first summer internship that Lance began his work on his now-published book.

That same summer Lance also traveled with fellow members of the freshman business honors class to China. He describes the 10-day trip, part of Molloy's Global Learning program as a "real eye-opening experience" - one of many he's had while in college.

"I've experienced something new-and been able to challenge myself - here every day. I can honestly say that Molloy has changed my life in many subtle ways. I can now look at a situation much differently than I did before. That's the premise of my book: thinking beyond the norm to pursue what you're passionate about."
