What can I expect within the sessions?

Face-to-face sessions are conducted in private, and all records are strictly confidential. The student and counselor will develop strategies to address specific goals, and then determine the length of time necessary to resolve these concerns. The goal of counseling is to help students acquire the skills needed to live a more effective life and/or successfully overcome a difficult challenge. Students who require longer-term services can receive assistance via referrals to other agencies or providers within their community.

Who is it for?

The personal counseling service is available for all students, full-time or part-time, undergraduate or graduate. The personal counseling service offers assistance to students coping with many different types of issues, including but not limited to:

  • Stress
  • Academic Motivation
  • Cultural Differences
  • Self-Esteem
  • Depression
  • Loneliness
  • Relationship Issues
  • Eating Disorders
  • Substance Abuse
  • Grief and Bereavement
  • Balancing School/Family
  • Conflicts over Sexuality
  • No problem is too big or too small


What does it cost?

The Personal Counseling Service offers free short-term counseling for all students. If long-term counseling or outside services are needed the counselor with help the student find the most appropriate and cost effective treatment.

How do I make an appointment?

To make an appointment please call 516.678.5000 ext. 6545 or 7721. Voicemail is available for messages and the call will be returned within 24 hours Monday - Friday. After making the initial call, you will be given the soonest and most convenient appointment available. If you are unable to reach a counselor and it is an emergency you need to call ext. 11 and Public Safety will direct you to the appropriate place.

Where is the office?

The Personal Counseling Service is located on campus in Kellenberg 207. 

How can I receive more information about the Personal Counseling services?

Brochures are given out to all new students during orientation. For more copies please stop by Kellenberg 003 where they are displayed outside of the office or in the Student Development Center. Feel free to call if any other information is needed!

Your confidentiality is our utmost concern. All information gathered in counseling, including if a student has or has not come to counseling, is held in strict confidence. No information is to be released without an individual student's written consent. The personal counseling service abides by all state and federal laws governing confidentiality. When there is a threat to self, others, or a child is at risk of abuse or neglect, the law may require the situation be reported to the appropriate authorities.
