Molloy's Sustainablility Institute News and Events
March 29, 2012
We are pleased to announce and invite all to the next screening in the Sustainable Film Series on Thursday March 29, 2012, at the Sustainability Institute at Molloy, 7180 Republic Airport, Farmingdale, NY 11735. This time out, we are screening the film BAG IT (www.bagitmovie.com) and partnering with Operation SPLASH. (www.operationsplash.net) All are invited with an RSVP on the Facebook event page or by calling 516-678-5000 ext 7562.
Bag It follows "everyman" Jeb Berrier as he tries to make sense of our dependence on plastic bags. Although his quest starts out small, Jeb soon learns that the problem extends past landfills to oceans, rivers and ultimately human health.
The average American uses about 500 plastic bags each year, for about twelve minutes each. This single-use mentality has led to the formation of a floating island of plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean more than twice the size of Texas.
The film explores these issues and identifies how our daily reliance on plastic threatens not only waterways and marine life, but human health, too. Two of the most common plastic additives are endocrine disruptors, which have been shown to link to cancer, diabetes, autism, attention deficit disorder, obesity and infertility.

The Sustainable Film Series screening of GASLAND
The Sustainability Institute at Molloy College is proud to announce and invite you to a Sustainable Film Series screening on Thursday November 10, 2011. Free admission, vegan food and popcorn at 6:00. Film starts at 7:00. This time out we will be screening the film GASLAND.
Part verité road trip, part exposé, part mystery and part showdown. GASLAND follows director Josh Fox on a 24-state investigation of the environmental effects of hydraulic fracturing. What he uncovers is mind-boggling: tap water so contaminated it can be set on fire right out of the tap; chronically ill residents with similar symptoms in drilling areas across the country; and huge pools of toxic waste that kill livestock and vegetation.
The Sustainable Film Series is a free documentary series presented by the Sustainability Institute at Molloy College that screens films with a focus on environmental protection and sustainability, and features a different organizational partner for each presentation. This screening's partnering organization is Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition.
