Policies & Procedures
The following information states the policies and procedures for checking out and renewing books, ereserves and interlibrary loan. Additionally, we ask that you review the library's Code of Conduct.
Access Policies:
- The library is open to the Molloy community and includes faculty, students, administrators and staff as well as:
- Anyone who wishes to use the library facilities for research - please keep in mind you will not be able to take books outside of the library premises.
- Anyone associated with an institution that participates in the local Research Loan Program (RLP) or Interlibrary Loan.
Book Policies & Fines
- The fine for overdue books is ten cents per day.
- The fine for a lost book is $50.
- Payment for fines and lost books must be made in cash to obtain an immediate release form. Checks are accepted but must be allowed to clear. Credit / Debit cards are not accepted.
- Any overdue fines or fees associated with the loss of library books or materials is the responsibility of the person taking these items out of the library.
- In the case of extreme delinquency, the Bursar could place a "Hold" on the student's account, which would impact their ability to register for future classes.
- Books can only be held for students for a maximum of 3 days. Items left at the Circulation Desk must be accompanied with a note indicating the student's name, the current date and the date and/or time the item(s) will be retrieved.
- Reference Books and items in Special Collections are non-circulating. Reference books may be taken out for use by a professor. Interested faculty are encouraged to Ask a Librarian for more information.
Borrowing:
- The Molloy ID card also serves as a library card. Only those who have a valid, current ID card can borrow books from the library.
- The loan period for books is two (2) weeks.
- Books may be renewed either at the circulation desk or online.
E-Reserves Policy:
Access to E-Reserves is limited to Molloy College users for each course. There is no charge for accessing E-Reserves materials. Authorized access to E-Reserves is available to both on-campus and off-campus users.
- Documents are stored in portable document format (PDF) unless otherwise specified. Users will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on their computer to view these documents.
- The policy governing electronic reserves is based on the provisions of fair use as outlined in the United States Copyright Act of 1976.
- Section 107 of the Act permits the making of multiple copies for classroom use by considering the purpose and character of use. This includes:
- The nature of the copyrighted work
- The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the work as a whole
- The effect of such use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work
- All materials placed on E-Reserves will be at the initiation of faculty for non-commercial, educational use of students.
- Items which are available elsewhere on Library databases (electronic or CD) are not candidates for E-Reserves. Such material should not be duplicated.
- Complete or longer works, such as books or course packs, will not be copied for E-Reserves.
- The library will not place materials on E-Reserves without copyright permission if the nature, scope, or extent of the materials is judged by the librarians to exceed the reasonable limits of fair use.
- Faculty are responsible for upholding copyright compliance.
- Electronic files will be removed from the E-Reserves system at the end of each term or upon the conclusion of the course.
Interlibrary Loan
Before initiating the request, think about the following:
- ILL is not the solution if you require the material right away - books or articles can take up to three weeks to arrive at the library
- Is the article truly unique enough where it is worth the wait? There may be numerous articles similar in nature that are available immediately in full text. Not sure? Ask a Librarian!
- Are you sure we do not own or already have full text access to the material? Check for books. Check for articles (journal title, article title, volume, issue and page number(s) required).
- You'll need a valid Molloy I.D. card that does not have any outstanding library fines.
Other things to know:
- Items usually not available for loan include: Brand new materials, textbooks, reference materials, reserve materials, media, photographs, archival material, microfilm, primary documents, dissertations, rare books, entire issues of journals and materials from Special Collections.
- Loan Period: This is determined by the lending library, so please pay careful attention to the due date once you receive the materials.
- Renewals: Must be requested in advance of the material's due date and is at the descretion of the lending library.
- Notification: When the requested materials are received at the library, unless otherwise specified, the notification method will the patron's Molloy email address.
- Copyright Restrictions: The library cannot process more than five articles from a single title per calendar year.
