"Participating in Molloy's community outreach programs for the homeless has really opened my eyes to the poverty that exists in this country. Meeting these people has been just amazing. After hearing their stories, I now understand a little bit about what it's like to be homeless.
"Coming from Wisconsin, I had never even seen a homeless person - much less had a conversation with one - so this was completely out of my 'comfort zone.' Before enrolling at Molloy, I spent some time in Americorps, traveling around the country, helping people. I taught troubled youth, assisted with the clean-up in New Orleans and worked with organic farmers in Rhode Island.
"During this time, I realized I wanted to be a nurse, found out about Molloy's nationally-ranked program online and headed east. I've always had a love for service so I got involved in community outreach right away. I spent my 2007 spring break in Camden, New Jersey, which is one of the poorest cities in America. Big industry left the city and left the people with nothing - no jobs, no opportunities. The people are really suffering and want to share their stories and have someone listen to them.
"I also participate in Molloy's 'Midnight Runs' when we bring food and clothing to people living on the streets of Manhattan and in 'BoxTown at Bethany' where we spend time with the Bethany House's homeless women and children then spend the night sleeping outside.
"There's just so much need in the world. You have to do something."
