Molloy students spend time at the Web of Life Ecology Center in Kermit, West Virginia with six teenage boys.
The "Appalachia Gang" arrived safely back to Molloy today at a record breaking time, 5:00pm! Dr. Maureen Moulder, Prof. Mary Jane Guilfoyle, Brigid Damm, Mike Lieberman, Jenn Roveto, Connor Ryall, Renee Smucker, Cynthia Sollin, Salvatore Ubaldini and I spent this past week with 6 teenage boys at the Web of Life Ecology Center in Kermit, West Virginia. The students planned and ran a camp for these boys for the week. As always, it was an amazing experience and our students were outstanding! It is such an opportunity to put into action all that has been learned in the classroom. The boys that came to the camp were so happy to be with our students and learned much from them even in such a short time. For these boys, this was their only real "summer fun." It was hard for them to leave and for us to see them go. They also were very happy to receive lots of "Molloy Treats" from Athletics and Student Life.
I hope you can sense from the pictures what a great time was had by all! Please take a special note of the boys wearing Molloy shirts...they wore them EVERYDAY!
Thank you one and all for making this project continue to be such a blessing for our students and for our friends at the Web of Life Ecology Center. Sister Gretchen, Sister Kathy and Sister Jeanne were overwhelmed when we presented the check for $5,000.00 to them. By the way, Molloy College has been part of the Web of Life family for 17 years!!
Appalachia Project 2011: A poem written by Jenn Roveto for the boys at the camp
We came to the mountain to have a good time,
now let us reminisce with a tiny little rhyme.
Eleven special people from the place we call Molloy,
journeyed to the forest land to meet six unique teenage boys.
Crazy personalities with very funny names,
we did our best to be your friends and play tons of awesome games.
Lots of swimming, games and more,
our time at the Web was far from a bore.
Yes, we had fun, but we learned lot of things, too!
Sister Kathy, Gretchen and Jeanne, we'll never forget you!
Squirrel houses, bird feeders, volcanoes, and ice cream,
spending time with you boys was undoubtedly a dream!
We will think about you everyday,
I promise you we're never far away!
Our hearts will never forget your super-duper smiles,
your jokes and silly attitudes will last us all the miles.
Always dream big and keep your eyes on the prize,
go to school and do your work so you can get really wise.
Remember to have fun and to respect everyone.
Cherish all the memories that we were lucky enough to share,
And know that Molloy College will always care!
