How do I apply for certification? (NYSED programs only)
The following information is specific to our Education (graduate certifications) programs.
Certification requirements vary by individual. NYSED may accept previously completed undergraduate or graduate coursework, which could reduce your remaining requirements. We recommend applying for certification through the TEACH Online System before enrolling in courses. This evaluation identifies any unmet requirements and may take 2 to 3 months to complete. Visit the NYSED Certification Requirements Search Tool for the full list of NYSED requirements.
You can start the process by going to the NYS Office of Teaching Initiatives and accessing the TEACH Online System (log in or create an account). From there you would either create a TEACH account or sign-in to a TEACH account that you may already have and then follow these steps:
- Under, "Online Application", select, Apply for Certificate.
- Read through the instructions and complete your profile.
- Proceed to "Step 2 - Select Certificate(s)."
- Under "New Certificate Title," select your Area of Interest
- Select Your Subject Area
- Select the Grade Level
- Select Title
- Select the Type of Certificate: (the certification that you currently hold in your primary area, either "initial" or "professional" certificate) and click "Add," and proceed to the next page.
- On the page, "Educational Preparation for this application only," select: "No, I have not completed, nor am I enrolled in, an Approved Teacher Preparation Program at a New York State College or University for this certificate and this type" and click "Next."
- Complete the information on "Interstate Reciprocity" and click "Next."
- Select the type of certificate(s): Pathway: Additional Classroom Teaching Certificate (Must hold a valid certificate) and click, "Next."
- Complete "Step 3 - Sign Affidavit."
- Complete "Step 4 - Confirm and Sign Application."
- Complete "Step 5 - Make Payment."
There is a $100 fee to apply for certification, which is valid as long as you complete the process within three years and do not ask for more than two evaluations.
You will need to send your transcripts to NYS for them to evaluate. Please visit the following NYSED webpage for information on where to send your transcripts. You can check the status of your evaluation here.
