Development and Fundraising

Molloy College, in partnership with the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Long Island Chapter (AFPLI), offers two certificate programs in development, philanthropy and fundraising management designed to meet the needs of individuals who are marketing and raising money for not-for-profit organizations.

  • If you are a development professional, executive director, board member, volunteer, or have any affiliation with a  not- for-profit organization of any size, you will learn all the pieces of the development picture and how they fit together - and you will become more effective in dealing with board members, volunteers, staff and clients.
  • If you are contemplating a career change, you should know that knowledgeable fundraising executives are highly respected and sought. This curriculum will help you meet your professional goals.
  • If you are considering using your skills to become a consultant in the not-for-profit world, this program will help you gain the specialized knowledge you need.
  • The program is presented by instructors with extensive fundraising and marketing experience, as well as excellent teaching skills. Interactive classes and expert guest lecturers enable students to learn from others representing a wide range of non-profit organizations.

All AFPLI members are eligible for partial tuition reimbursement and scholarships. For reimbursement and membership information, call Joan Connor at 631-249-5008 or by email at info@afpli.org.  Further information on the AFPLI can also be found on their website at: www.afpli.org.

All courses will be offered off-campus at Molloy’s Suffolk Center at Route 110, 7180 Republic airport, East Farmingdale. Click here for directions.

Curriculum and Scheduling
Classes can be taken individually or in pursuit of two certificates. These courses are complete in themselves and require no prior knowledge in the specific area. However, it is suggested that for those students taking courses toward one, or both, of the certificates, the core course, The Business of Raising Money for the Non-Profit Sector, and the free workshop - Your Career in Development & Fundraising - should be taken first. Each course meets once a week in the evening for four to seven weeks. The workshop meets one night. Courses are graded pass/fail.

The following is a listing of the courses that are offered.

  •   Your Career in Development & Fundraising - Free workshop - Fall and Spring semester
  • The Business of Raising Money for the Non-Profit Sector (Core –Fall semester)
  • Building the Ultimate Board of Directors (Elective – Fall semester)

Certificate and Advanced Certificate Requirements
To earn the Certificate in Development and Fundraising Management, each student is required to successfully complete four courses, one of which must be the core course, as well as the career workshop. To earn the Advanced Certificate in Development and Fundraising Management, each student is required to successfully complete eight courses, one of which must be the core course, as well as the career workshop. Students who have already earned the Certificate in Development and Fundraising Management need to complete four additional elective courses for the Advanced Certificate.

No sequence is required, however, for those without previous experience, we recommend beginning with the core course and the workshop, "Your Career in Development and Fundraising," as they both will provide you with an overview of the basics of fundraising and career strategies. Once all courses are completed, the student must notify Continuing Education & Professional Development at Molloy College; they will notify the AFPLI to issue your certificate.
